Recently I got an email announcing deadlines for registering for this fall's Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and until then I had never heard of the FE exam. After reading the website I'm still fuzzy on where exactly it fits in with my education/career path, this fall I'll be completing the last (fingers crossed) year of an engineering degree (BS) and have no idea what comes next.

So what exactly is the FE exam? When does one take it? How does one prepare?
Is there another exam that comes after that or what?

I'm so lost about what happens after this upcoming year its terrifying.

well from seeing family members taking different engineering degrees all i could say is that you have to study your ass off on those. FE maybe not as much but for PE thats when it gets difficult.

Ugh yeah, I was expecting to "study my ass off" even though I would rather not.

The PE exam comes much farther down the road thankfully, once I get professional experience.

I believe passing the FE exam is mandatory to taking the PE. The only things allowed into the FE exam is bottled water and an NCEES approved calculator. You are allowed no study materials. You must pass all on your own knowledge. For this reason, it is a very good idea to take (and hopefully pass) the FE while you're in college while stuff is fresh in your mind. It's a pretty brutal all-day exam.

Some Universities require that their students pass the FE exam in order to graduate. This was the case for me. I had to take AND PASS the FE exam in order to get recieve my diploma.
