If some cops are assholes, it may have something to do with the fact that they are reviled by a lot of people. I suppose being
hated by every other person you pass on the street would make anybody an asshole. Then of course, there are the dead bodies, the verbal abuse, crazies, sociopaths, and plain losers that cops have to deal with every day.
Yep, that would make most people assholes. I'll warrant that there are many, many crooked cops who are jerks through and through. Look at it from their perspective, though, and their mentality becomes a little more comprehensible.
In any case, as much as everyone bitches about cops, you all know that if they disappeared tomorrow you'd go ape-shit. A few months of unmitigated chaos would be an eye-opener...then guess what everyone would be demanding?
So if you're going to hate cops, hate all law and order as well--don't blow hot and cold in one breath.
