I hope I'm posting this in the correct forum.

I just found out tonight that my friend, a 43 year old male had a stroke on Tuesday but since his wife was out of town, she returned on Thursday and found him and immediately called 911.

He's been in ICU since Thursday and no one really knows what's going on. The one thing we do know was that he was using cocaine.

Has anyone ever had this happen to them or a friend?
What are the possibilities of him turning out to be okay?

It really depends upon the type of stroke, and how severe it is. The doctors are the only ones that will be able to give you any information regarding prognosis etc.

Time is of the essence however, and the delay in receiving treatment will obviously not work in his favor.

Strokes are horrible things. I hope your friend pulls through okay.

Thank You, since I'm not family I have not heard much and his wife is not talking to anyone.

I agree, time is vital in this situation and I'm really fearing the worst. I hope he pulls through and will let you know.

One thing not many people realize is that its definitely possible to recover from a stroke over time. I dont know his situation and what his health was like before he had the stroke, and I dont want to give you false hope but its very possible that he may regain some of his physical and psychologica abilities. Unlikely that he will be the person he was before this happened though. All you can do at this point is hope for the best and I will be doing the same.

Hope your ok :)

Thank You so much. I'm so worried and I know there is not a doctor on here to answer this question.

Yes, I have a friend that is older and has had 3 strokes and is fine but he also got quick medical attention.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

I am 49 y/o and I had a stroke when I was 44 y/o. I was doing cocaine and chilling in a hot tub when I felt a twang?? in my head and I lost vision in my right eye. I told my friends I felt funny but they laughed and said I was tweaking. I called 911 next morning early and hospital said it was stroke and not the first one but probably my third. I had to change my lifestyle drastically!! To anyone who thinks they can do drugs into their 40's without impunity then good luck. I had to work hard to get motor skills back. I still talk like I'm retarded and people look at me funny but I have all my intelligence. I hope your friend will be ok but no more drugs for him. He is lucky and don't let him forget it. He's still alive. Good luck.

Medical threads are usually a grey area. I'll let this one slide however because your friend is under medical supervision.

Basic Drug Discussion -> Healthy Living

It all depends on the severity of the stroke and the person's ability to adapt in the aftermath. Whatever faculties have been lost can sometimes be regrained with therapy, but I have to be honest... a stroke patient left alone for 2 days could mean permanent damage. The window of time for using clot-busting drugs on the ischemic parts of the brain is 2-5 hours. After 2 days, those parts of the brain would have completely atrophied, but this would have to be confirmed with an MRI scan.

Because cocaine is a beta blocker, it will increase heart rate as well as cause constriction of the blood vessels. If a person has an ischemic event forming in the brain, stimulating the sympathetic nervous system could be enough to push the person into heart attack and stroke territory.

I've known a couple of people who had strokes in their old age. They were never the same again, unfortunately. I don't want you to give up hope but you should know the reality...

when I was 27yo, I had two heat strokes, lost a lot of my memory, felt absolutely UGLY, stupid too. I rehabilitated myself through doing mathematics with the help of a calculator and lessons out of older text books I had. I shoulda came out and told someone what was happening. It took me a few years to recover.

Hope your friend gets the help to let him return back to what he previously was. Strokes are a bitch.

Just want to let you know he can get away with pretty minimal conseuqnces, in some cases even none. My dad had two strokes, and he is prefectly fine, except he has a pins and needles feeling sometimes in his cheek and memory problems, but there are other contributing factors to this. I hope your friend pulls trough.
