Former NZ MP’s shock idea to end ice scourge: ‘Execute meth dealers’

A FORMER New Zealand MP believes the key to ending the country’s ice epidemic is by executing Chinese meth dealers.

Mana Party leader Hone Harawira made the shocking call at the weekend when he told a news program methamphetamine, commonly known as ice in Australia, was mainly sourced from China.

“We can pass a law to say any Chinese who bring meth or its precursors into this country is either going to jail forever, is going to get sent back and never be allowed here again, or is going to get executed,” he told Three’s The Nation.

Mr Harawira comes from the Far North of the North Island, an area of New Zealand that has been hit hardest by the ice epidemic.

He was not advocating any other nationalities should be executed — only Chinese — but denied his idea was racist.

He said the policy could eventually cover other nationalities, but “you’ve got to start somewhere”.

Mr Harawira comes from one of the country’s most high profile Maori activist families and he is hopeful of regaining his House of Representatives seat in a general election in late September.

“International research will confirm that the greatest source for methamphetamine is China, the greatest source for the precursors of methamphetamine is China, the greatest source of expertise for the production of methamphetamine is China,” he told Newshub on Monday morning.

His policy was modelled on one used in Singapore “where they have a three-strike penal policy and execution of drug smugglers”.

He repeated his statement this morning that New Zealanders would not initially be targeted in the same way.

“Let’s start somewhere, let’s start with people who are actually bringing it in”.

Much of New Zealand’s methamphetamine comes from the Guangdong province, in mainland China, which also plays a major role in Australia’s growing meth crisis.

A Labour MP dismissed the idea, saying not even “Donald Trump at the height of his anti-China narrative didn’t suggest an ethnically targeted death penalty” while Police Minister Paula Bennett said it was not a policy the Government was considering.

Isn't this already going strong in the Phillipines, while also completely lacking any positive results?

My god. :(
Yeah, extrajudical killings never really work out so well. I mean, it's a good way for butchers like the Philippines president to kill their political and social enemies, but it's not great for society.

They should legalise cannabis, i hear that's hard to get in NZ.
When meth becomes easier to get, it gradually becomes more normalised, and more problematic. That certainly seemed to happen in Australia during an MDMA epidemic. All the people that took pills and 'party drugs' ended up taking meth, as it was the only stimulant reliably available.
I imagine New Zealand could have similar issues. Australia and New Zealand are much smaller - and very isolated - drug markets compared to Europe or North America.

This politician is obviously a dickhead though.
It's especially evident with the remarks about chinese people. Not cool.

pretty racist

meth use is certainly linked to ease of access like anything addictive

easy access weed would make leaving it alone much much easier.

amphetamine addiction withdrawl and that long road to recovery made 100 times easier with weed. helps deal with mood from depleted dopamine
