flax seed oil / cod liver oil

they've got omega 3's and fatty acids that our bodies need but don't get much of. feels great. i feel calm, information seems to process easier- feels similar to getting very hydrated :D i guess it's my body telling me "you've needed this"

Hell yeah. Big ups to Omega-3's. There are *countless* benefits to taking those supplements, particularly as almost everyone's diet is so badly lacking in them.

I personally lean towards marine-based Omega-3's such as Cod Liver Oil and fish oil (from salmon/mackerel) because they have the added advantage of containing DHA (great for your neurological pathways... ie. your brain) but flaxseed oil is good too.

Our western diet is so far skewed towards Omega-6 oils it's not funny. Ideally, we should be consuming a 1:1 ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3. Most western diets are more like 30:1 in favour of Omega-6.

I agree about omega 3s. But just for the sake of discussion. Has any one read any of Ray Peats books? Basically he says omega 3s are very unstable (duh). But he says they are unstable in the tissues and so cause lots of free radical damage. Any thoughts? And I know you can just take lots of antioxidants. But what about his theory? He is a very good research scientist. I think one of the best in nutrition.

I thought the lack of omega 3's in the oil we eat is the problem, so I don't understand that pov, but thanks for the heads up. Will look it up.

Flaxseed oil also is rich in the omega-3 fatty acids, but a few studies suggest that flaxseed oil may promote the growth of prostate cancer in men (but not breast cancer in women). Until these studies are sorted out or confirmed, I think the better part of valor would be to go with fish oil rather than flaxseed oil, at least in men.

DarthMom, Omega 3s are polyunsaturates and so are unstable. Like all polyunsaturates they are quite capable of forming free radicals easily when they become unstable (rancid). That's why you shouldn't heat omega3s and really any polyunsaturate, althought some are more stable than others. One of the theorys of aging is that feel radicals are the cause. Thats why there are recommendations to take antioxidants which control free radical production. One of Peats pet theorys is that when these polyunsaturates build up to high levels in the body tissues they can cause alot of free radical damage in the body. He recommends a traditional diet of saturated fats like meat, butter, dairy, eggs, and especially coconut oil as being the most healthful fats to consume. He says we need only very small amounts of polyunsaturate omega 3s and hardly any other polyunsaturates.

I don't necessarily agree with him,( I do think he is brilliant) although I do think it is a very good Idea to limit omega 6 and 9s. I do also think that saturated fats are healthy especially coconut oil, which is incredably stable to heat.

Hope this explains it a little. :) a good book by Ray Peat is Mind and Tissue.

what about flax seeds???

instead of taking flax seed oil, buy whole flax seed and blend them into a protein shake or make flax meal out of them.

then u get the good fiber we all need, ligens, and other good stuff from the whole seed.

i would guess that the oil would keep fresh the best locked in the seed until u grind it:\ :\

fish oil is the best source of omegas, liquid being better than capsules

I completely and utterly agree with this statement. 100%.

And anyone who knows their Omega-3's and absorbtion rates etc. would be inclined to agree. The only - and I mean only - reason to take flaxseed over fish oil is for vegetarian purposes.

Will post up an article on the comparison when I'm back at work. But basically, it's analagous to iron - iron from meat sources (haem) is absorbed around 10 times better than that from vegetable sources (non-haem). It's similar with Omega 3. There's less of a conversion process.

And fish oil liquid is what the real fans take - 1 teaspoon = 10 fish oil capsules. And it's absorbed quicker; like all liquid supplements.

^ and fish oil, unlike flax seed, is high in the fatty acids DHA and EPA which are crucial to preventing heart disease, cancer, etc.. also low levels of DHA are linked to depression, schizophrenia, memory loss, and a higher risk of developing Alzheimer's.. it's sad that so much $$$ is spent on pills to alleviate the latter conditions when simple dietary mods can cure a lot of cases

^ nah I'm not in the industry, I just have an avid interest in nutrition and like to know exactly what I'm putting in my body is doing to me :)

I like and use fish oils. Still there is one great benifit to flax, and that is Lignans, which are a type of fiber found in flax. There are some impressive studies about this fiber in prevention of certain cancers. Breast and Prostrate inparticular.

Grinding them in your electric coffee grinder works great and you can even get them with the oil removed at health food stores.

Lignins are found in any seed with a hard coat. Its also what makes wood strong. Cellulose fibers form a sort of network of thin fibrous stands, which are embedded in lignin. Its very much like reinforced concrete.

I totally misread what you posted. lignan and lignin are not the same things. They are similar in structure, though. You find lignins in high concentrations in hard, woody things... but all through certain types of plant tissue in the cell walls for support. Lignans accumulate in storage vacuoles.

Though it seems lignins from plants may be used to form lignans in mammals.
