So I did it... errr... sorta. It was my first attempt, and I only lasted a day. I really did try to persevere, but by the second day, my stomach was in so much pain I had to eat. I had an intense craving for meat, not really much interest in carbs or veggies I just HAD to have MEAT. My weight normally never yoyos around but I lost FOUR pounds by the second day :( not a very encouraging first attempt. maybe fasting just isn't for my body type, i notice that a lot of the fasting proponents are lanky, lean people who can probably deal with massive weight loss better. anyway... it was a juice fast, so here's a log of what i drank and my thoughts about it afterwards:

Turnip

Thought of food throughout the day. Having never been a complete day without food, it was really an ordeal. Being sleepless for two days is a walk in the park next to this. The realization that there are people on earth who live with foodless days normally has a lot of impact. All night long I dreamed nightmares that I cheated on my fast, interspersed with an irrelevant déjà-vu dream from a while ago.

I'm sure you're already well-educated on the subject, but did you lay low while you were fasting? I'd recommend not doing anything that expels very much physical or mental power, i.e. don't leave the house or move much around, don't read or watch television or talk on the phone, do chill under the sun for a little bit. Some of that may seem extreme, so just find whatever your own suitable minimum amount of energy expenditure is.

Also, the day--or at least night--before the fast, it is helpful to wean yourself into the process by only consuming fresh fruits and vegetables, maybe some fresh soup as well. This applies to immediately after the fast, as well.

This is from the perspective of a lean, lanky person, though.

you've gotta ease into the fast and ease off it. of course if your stomach is full (of shit) and stretched out, you're going to be craving food a lot more.

I say give it another shot doing it properly. By day 3 your hunger will be gone.

The way Muslim people do it is what you could try. It's done for a month; you start fasting (not eating or drinking at all, actually no smoking, chewing a gum or sucking on candy either. But the good part is that you can actually eat (light stuff, like a brunch actually) which is usually once after dusk & once before dawn. I'm guessing that you are doing it either to detox your body, give it a little break or loose some weight. You could choose a time around 8 o'clock in the evening and 4 o'clock in the morning to have some food.
The point isn't to starve but like I said before to give your body some time to rest (especially your digestive system), get healthier during the process and if you look at it from a cognitive and spiritual perspective (it doesn't mater if you are a Muslim or not; fuck the fanatic religious types and whatever they think) to feel what the poor people feel (empathy is the main point here) and to exercise self control.
On the first few days, it may be hard but like others said; once your stomach starts to shrink, it will get much easier. Good luck with it.

ahh i almost forgot about this thread, thanks for the responses :) from what you guys are telling me, perhaps my main fuck up was by jumping feet-first into the fast after a day of loaded eating. i guess i just thought all the juice would be enough to stave away potential hunger but damn i was wrong!

i decided to give it another shot in a month, not for an extreme length of time but just a short fast i can do on a monthly basis. i'm preparing myself by altering my diet radically to make fats my main source of fuel instead of carbohydrates so that the fasting will burn through body fat not muscle as i fear it was doing in my brief attempt by how much weight i suddenly lost.

btw it's been only a few days since i switched over to a high fat diet with no grains (i'm getting the minimum required carbs from veggies) and i feel fantastic! would definitely recommend trying this to anyone :) the pre-fast detox!
