the more i watch this film, the more it blows me away. truly a stunning, leave you speachless and in awe sort of movie.

mel gibsons finest work, by far. a flick about the first major battle of vietnam, this will rip at your soul. the balance between combat and human emotion is gripping until the last scene. not to be watched alone, or when depressed...it will have you in tears even if you are in a good mood.

if you watch one movie about war, ever, watch this.

Haven't seen or heard of this one. But for me, 'Das Boot' is the best war movie ever (although Full Metal Jacket deserves an honourable mention for perhaps the best first-half-of-a-film ever).

I personally found it one-sided, overly melodramatic and chock full of cliches.

But whatever floats your boat.

It wasn't a bad war movie, I'll agree. Especially a war movie about vietnam that isn't just trying desperately to be Platoon or Full Metal Jacket. So props for that.

What it wasn't, was a GREAT war movie.

Blackhawk Down, Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line are the only memorable 3 war movies of the past 10 years, IMO. All three of those movies had better casts and were shot better. Espeically The Thin Red Line which relied more on visual, rather than a script, to leave you with an impact.

Better directors on the above 3 as well.

It's a firm 2.5 star movie with ol' Mel.

I thought that Enemy at the Gates: The Battle for Stalingrad was a pretty war movie. Especially in theatres.
There is a great war book called "War of the Rats" That tells the story of the 2 snipers.
I recommend that anyone interested in the battle for stalingrad read it.

ohh, i've seen pretty much every war flick made. the problem with black hawk down is that it didnt make you care about any of the characters...it was very emotionless. saving private ryan was great, but the war was almost a secondary story to the rest of the plot. what i loved about we were soldiers is the war and the men were the main focus. yes there are some cliches, but what movie doesnt have some? yes there is some melodrama, but its definitely bearable.
there are some excellent performances, especially mel gibson, madeline stowe, greg kinnear, sam elliot, and barry pepper. even chris klien (of american pie fame) holds his own...only good movie i have seen him in.

i also love how they dont vilanize the enemy as most war flicks do...they present them on nearly equal footing, and show some of the impact war has on their lives. as well, the scenes were madeline stowe and kerri russle hand out the letters to the wives, very gripping and sad.

The only thing good about this movie, was showing the war from the Vietnamese viewpoints and strategic planning.
Other than that, this film lacks in comparison to other major war films.

What killed it for me was the fluffyness of the movie.
The scene where the wives get the letters made the movie too "Nice"

If you want to watch movies like this, go rent Forrest Gump or Dead Presidents. The main focus in those movies isn't the war, but mainly the characters.

Also, was it just me or did Mel Gibson act like he was reprising his role from Braveheart??

^^ Isn't he always reprising his role from Braveheart? Did he get tortured in We Were Soldiers? If not, he musta been pissed, cause we all know how much Mel Gibson likes the torture....

We Were Soldiers is probably the most accurate depiction of Vietnam (Well, at least the way it was in Ia Drang), since most other Vietnam movies were made when the wounds of Vietnam were still fresh, thus they were tainted with the prevailing attitudes toward the military.

That being said, you can't really compare We Were Soldiers to, say, Apocalypse Now, simply because the former tries to paint a realistic view of a battle, while the latter is trying to make a compelling drama that they chose to set in Vietnam.
