Saw Pedro Almodovar's latest last night. Certainly has a claim on being his finest film to date.

Once again the focus is on strong women battling through whatever life throws at them (and as per usual with Almodovar, life throws the kitchen sink). Once again we're offered a caustic, cynical portrait of contemporary Spanish society, patriarchy and the role of men. And once again, Almodovar shows he's a master of tragedy steeped in black comedy.

Penelope Cruz is incredible in the lead role... it really makes you wonder why she sold out and appeared in so much utter trash (same reasons as everyone else I guess). As anyone who's familiar with his work will tell you, Almodovar knows how to get the best out of his cast, and this performance is no exception.

Highly recommended.

Nice film but I find it to be Pedro's weakest effort for a while, probably cos he has set such high standards .

For someone who is looking to get into Almovodar,i would skip this one till you watch "Talk to Her" or better still " Live Flesh"

THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS

If you like the kind of magical realism that was born in the myth shrouded steam of the Latin world, then this movie is for you. This was the first movie I watched where I really thought Penelope Cruz was super hot; the movie shoots her extremely well. It’s a story about a single woman whose daughter stabs her own father to death… only to find out he wasn’t her father and that’s why he was putting the moves on her. Penelope puts his body in the freezer of their neighbor’s restaurant, which she then takes over while he’s gone and turns into a successful business. Meanwhile, her dead mother has come back to life.

The movie plays with these parts for about an hour before the big reveal: the mother isn’t a ghost, she’s been on the lam for setting her cheating husband and his mistress on fire. The second big shocker is that Penelope Cruz got pregnant by her own father and her daughter is also her sister. “She’s my sister! She’s my daughter! She’s my sister! She’s my sister and my daughter!” It doesn’t really have the same impact when not being screamed by Faye Dunaway as she is pummeled by Jack Nicholson.

Anyway, this is a very Spanish film and very a female film; no major male characters. In fact, most of the male characters are killed by the female characters who then go unpunished. It’s not really a world of society; it’s a world of women, myth, spirits and the bonds of family. I liked it. It made me want to eat paella for some reason.

a very colorful and vibrant film. penelope cruz is slowly becoming one of my favorite actresses%)
