The Last Samurai

Minor Spoilers

I enjoyed this film for what it was...a basic epic that had a similar tone as those before it. The cinematography is top notch, as well as the driving strength of the film, in my opinion, the score. The battle sequences are also excellent and are worthy of the Samurai genre of films. While the pace of the film is somewhat slow, I didn't find myself too bored with the material and admired the level of quality shown to represent traditional japanese culture.

The romantic aspect of the film I did not think was necessary, and I thought the film could have ended better...such as Cruise fulfilling the true honor of a Samurai.

Overall, I had a fun film experience and recommend it for those who are interested in historical epic war films.

Oh, and the leading lady is gorgeous. =D

Any other thoughts?

Thanks for the input! I reckon I would go see it if Tom Cruise wasn't in it.... he just puts me off.

This movie got over hyped for me, so I didn't enjoy it too much.

I was expecting it to be better than braveheart, gladiator, and glory.... however it was not.

I like Japanese culture, but was turned off by the movie. I dunno why. Didn't connect with me. I'd give it a 3.5 - 4 stars (out of five)

i agree with LapDawg 100%. fortunately the romance between cruise and the main female "lead" was pretty well played down. i was on pins and needles when she was dressing him, just praying it didnt turn into a full on love scene and totally wreck the movie. the only other gripe i had with the film was the way they beat you over the head w/ the idea of curise's assimilation with his other non white enemies. If you saw the trailor you knew what was going to happen anyway so i guess it's not that big of a deal but it was really leading and overdone imo.

other than those very minor points i loved this movie. again to borrow from LapDawg's post, the use of music in the film is so well done that i had goosebumps for a quite a while. anyone have any idea if Cruise used a stunt double for any of his fighting scenes? if not the guy is a fucking pimp, it all looked quite authentic to me.

i think the love story was necessary b/c i like love stories, but that's just me.

andy, i saw in an interview that he does pretty much all of his own stunts in the fight scenes.

this was probably one of the best movies i have seen in a really long time. it was so intense.

Cruise was certainly pimpin' it in the action scenes, but the real badass of the film was definitely Katsumoto's right hand man Ujio who was a KILLING MACHINE!!! =D The best move was the knock-off from the horse into a somersault and slice. 8o :D

haven't seen this yet, i'm planning on it though, but next time lapdawg mention you have spoilers in it before you talk about the ending ;)

Great movie. I almost cried at the end when Algren-san offered Katsumoto's sword to the Meiji emperor.

they've been running a thing on the history channel about the history of samorai. i suggest you check it out if you can, it's pretty interesting.

Yah, I saw it, it was good. And they basically went over everything I learned from an entire semester of Japanese civ in two hours.

LOL, Andy, I was on pins and needles myself hoping the same thing. Thank GOD it didn't turn into one, or I would have stopped paying attention to the movie. I hate forced love scenes8) .

I think it was probably Cruise's best acting in years. Normally I'm pretty "eh" on him, but I think he did a really good job in this.
I enjoyed this movie a great deal, more than I expected I would. It was definitely the best movie after LOTR ROTK to me.

Very strong film, I though they really took the audience within the culture of the Samurai, very interesting indeed, top stuff!

Anyone who has something against Tom Cruise is just insane, personally I think his presence is so dynamic, especially in his recent roles, he is awesome and makes the film even better, once again enjoyed it alot!

I loved the film and was anticipating it a lot and I was not dissapointed, however I wish they didn't make the Samurai look like the only righteous ones...I mean just look up a little history and see taht the samurai had their own selfish interests for rebelling and that the government wasn't exactly the bad guys in the movie...anyway I'll stop complaining. It was an awesome movie.

i did really enjoy this film... but tom cruise really ruined it for me. he seemed to make things way more cliche then they had to be. also i can't believe he survived... i mean for gods sake every man and his horse was shot in that last battle scene- at least 20 times! so yeh i thought that bit was a bit stupid but yeh. it inspired me to be alot more disciplined... so i started taekwondo and it's great! :)

oh my god.. and the emperor... what a strange, unexpected voice he had. heheh ... it was very peculiar

Took the slaying of all his samurais for the little dork of the emporer to grow some balls....and tom cruise learnt the ways of samurai fighting all in one season and defeated a bunch of guys fighting their whole lives...apart from those bits i enjoyed the movie alot, and it doe sseem like dances with wolves.

the dvd is out!

i highly suggest renting the dvd even if you saw this film in the theater. theres a ton of bonus footage and behind the scenes type of stuff that is really interesting.

one special feature that i really like is the history channel min doc on the historical accuracy of the film. all of the events are based on truth but obviously the story is fictional. it gives a bit of history on samurai and how their role in society had all but disappeared with feudalism. pretty intersting stuff. also some awesome "shorts" on the costumes and weapons used in the film. for sure worth checking out if not owning:)

Loved the film, and I'm not even a particular fan of Japanese history or culture; I think it was great in spite of its obvious similarities to "Dances with Wolves."
