Anyone else see this yet? I saw i last night and assure you it was easily one of top few most bizarre films I have ever seen.

For those of you who aren't aware, this is writer/director Richard Kelly's first work since Donnie Darko. As a huge Donnie Darko fan, I was definitely excited to see this film. And like I said, I'm still not sure what the hell to think about it. The storyline of Southland Tales makes Donnie Darko look as mundane and simple as Bambi. I think I will need to see it at least one more time before I can really make a good judgment about it.

Here's one individual's summary of the film, since I don't think I could attempt to write one at this point:

"California is at the epicenter of a political and environmental disaster that threatens to destroy the world in this ambitious fusion of comedy, drama, dystopia science fiction, and music. In the year 2005, a nuclear attack wipes out part of the state of Texas, and three years later America is a virtual police state, with the government taking control of nearly every part of people's lives, supposedly for their own good. A German firm has found a way to generate energy using seawater, but both public and private concerns are desperate to prevent the new technology from being introduced in the gasoline-starved United States. A Marxist underground based on the West Coast is determined to bring down the federal government through violent revolution. In this midst of this chaos, we follow a number of stories that continually return to three principle characters. Boxer Santaros is an actor famous for his role in action films; he's trying to secure financing for a new project, but reality keeps mirroring the events in his script and he struggles to hold on to his identity following a bout with amnesia. Krysta Now is a porn star who is reinventing herself as a television pundit offering her views on politics, contemporary culture, and teenage sex. And Roland Taverner is an L.A. police officer whose identity has mysteriously split in two and he struggles to track down his other half."

The cast is as random as the film itself:

Dwayne Johnson (yes, "The Rock")
Sarah Michelle Gellar
John Larroquette
Jon Lovitz
Mandy Moore
Justin Timberlake
Shawn William Scott
Cheri Oteri
Miranda Richardson
Wallace Shawn

Mods can make this a poll if they want. I think I'd give it about 2.5-3 stars for the first viewing.

Regardless if the film did at times perhaps try to do too much, I still think writer/ director Richard Kelly is one of the most creative young minds in film today.

I saw this recently as well as checked out the prequel graphic novels.
I thought it was an interesting take on the current state of affairs in the US with the upsurge of Cyberpunk ethos, drugs, the rise of fascist neo-conservatives, multi-media Idoru, brainwashed masses and push for global empire.
Thankfully, there were humorous elements to break the horror and evil. The way the plot line runs almost requires a second viewing because of one of the key plot mechanisms...(WARNING: SPOILER!)
NSFW:
Because of it following Boxer's future self, essentially picking up in the middle of the timeline. We had been toking up while watching and one of my friends asked if I had started the movie over because of the way it loops around on itself.

I liked the nod to Philip K. Dick in one scene (actually there are a few, but this one stands out) where a cop shoots an unarmed civilian and then says "Flow my tears." Reference the PKD novel "Flow My Tears...The Policeman Said".

If you are a fan of sci-fi, you'll like this movie.
If you are aware of the real world outside of the mainstream media, you like this and probably get chills like I did. I think it says something about the subject matter in that there are so many big names in this flick and yet there was virtually no mention in the press at all. Typical.

Watch this one.

I love Donnie Darko and think that Richard Kelly is a great writer and director. This movie just seems like it is going to be a gigantic mess. The plot sounds ridiculous and the casting sounds like a joke. Half of the cast from the 1980's Saturday Night Live(and the bad half at that). Not to mention it's supposedly set in the future of 2008. Wouldn't that be the present. I know this is because it was severely delayed, which is never a good sign. All I can say is,"Richard Kelly! What the fuck were you thinking!" Make The Box(based on a Twilight Zone episode)like IMDB has been mentioning you were going to make forever and stop trying to be so hard to reach in whatever message you are trying to convey.

I think SonOF was pretty spot on with his review. I still don't know quite what to think of it, but I ilked a lot of it.

A lot of the acting was still pretty shitty though...

Good soundtrack though. The best I have heard since The Crow.

I can't believe this movie got such bad reviews, I really liked it. And plan on watching it several more times. Not too sure if I understand everything, or how everyone is linked yet,

^Ditto that. I also plan on getting the lead up graphic novel. I am telling everyone I can about this movie. It certainly has its flaws, but it is the most compelling movie I have seen in a long time.

i had really high hopes for this and it really failed to deliver. it had many good ideas but it just came over as a sloppy, disjointed mess.

alasdair

Its a brilliant film.
After multiple viewings I think this is going to be a gem that truely shines.

Its too complex for most people, but if you can sort through the mess, I think one can truly find a cinematic masterpiece.

I have it in my library queue, should be ready for pick up any day now. Years ago, literally, I would go to the website for this film, I was quite intrigued, but the website was always half complete and the film was a long way off from viewing. After seeing Donnie Darko, which is just an undeniably fantastic film, I have been hoping for years that this film is good. I look forward to finally previewing it.

^I don't know why you're comparing the two.
Just because they had the same director doesn't mean that they're on the same level.
Both do involve time travel, but there are little similarities.

Just finished watching the movie, I loved it. I don't think I really know what happened but I liked the movie a lot regardless. It was very funny, unique, strange and very Richard Kelly. So glad I finally watched it!! Loved the random eclectic cast too. 4 out of 5 stars.

It's a classic.

Dont really care for the negative reviews, I recall "Fight Club" got panned by many when it came out, these same critics are now hailing that movie a masterpiece. So maybe time will be kind to this one as well.

Actually the NY times gave it a very good review, you need to register to read it though, so heres an extract which I find hard to argue with...

"American cinema is in the grip of a kind of moribund academicism, which helps explain why a fastidiously polished film like “No Country for Old Men” can receive such gushing praise from critics. “Southland Tales” isn’t as smooth and tightly tuned as “No Country,” a film I admire with few reservations. Even so, I would rather watch a young filmmaker like Mr. Kelly reach beyond the obvious, push past his and the audience’s comfort zones, than follow the example of the Coens and elegantly art-direct yet one more murder for your viewing pleasure and mine. Certainly “Southland Tales” has more ideas, visual and intellectual, in a single scene than most American independent films have in their entirety, though that perhaps goes without saying. -MANOHLA DARGIS

Plus Wallace Shawn was awesome in it, shades of Dean Stockwell in "Blue Velvet"

I wouldn't even try to rate this movie.

This movie alternated between intelligent and engaging, to stupid and absurd, to mindless and fun, etc etc, oh and it has some fucking godawfully hilarious lines (intentionally??? I assume so)... for those commenting on the poor acting, that too I thought was part of some elaborately contrived mixed up comedy/drama that this was...

what was it that Sarah Michelle Gellar said in this, "Scientists are saying the future is going to be far more futuristic than they originally predicted."
