Sid And Nancy

So I used to think Sid and Nancy was an awesome film. I used to think Sid Vicious was a legend and not just a good looking moron in the right place at the right time. I also thought Gary Oldman was one of the greatest actors of our time.

I came across this dvd the other day and without thinking, bought it because it was cheap and because I used to fuckin love this film.

Dammit, I used to fuckin love this film!!! But how things change. Seeing this movie again for the first time in about 10 years I'm beginning to question my teenage sense of taste and integrity. I'm finding Sid and Nancy so annoying and repulsive I haven't got further than half way, twice now. For starters, Nancy, played by Chloe Webb is the most aggravating character ever and what makes things worse is Nancy was a Real Person. She's loud, whiney and obnoxious and pretty much nothing more than a leech. Sucking the life out of poor Sid.

Gary Oldman plays Sid to perfection in all his idiocy. I used to think that was because he was a brilliant actor, but given his recent movies I'm not sure he didn't just lose some weight and spike his hair. Whatever, he played the part well and I still have a minor crush on him. And if it's true that Sid killed Nancy, I don't blame him one bit.

The acting in this film I think is very good though some of the people, specifically the johnny rotten character, look nothing like who they're meant to be; however he sings pretty well but the lack of resemblance is offputting. And holy shit, did I mention that Nancy is SO fuckin annoying?!! She shits me to tears and spoils the movie.

Basically it's a pretty depressing thing to watch. Her revolting character. Their descent into hell. As the title suggests, the film's about Sid and his skanky girlfriend. The sex pistols have little to do with things. So he goes about doing his thing and being whipped by Nancy while getting further into dream sequences if I remember right, or was that just getting further into the smack.

I realize this is a terrible review, lacking in many areas of objectivity. Perhaps soon if I can find the right mood to sit through the whole damn movie I might appreciate it again and be able to offer some actual insights, but at this stage I'm thinkin I wasted a few dollars that could've been better spent on a pack of cigarettes.

Anyone who's read so far, have you seen this film? Do you love it? Like it? Loathe it? Can we do a Rate This Film thing here? I'd appreciate some better takes on things.

edit: What I really want to know is, is this a great movie that I can no longer appreciate because I'm no longer in their headspace? Or is it a crap movie I only liked because I could relate at the time? Or Other.

I GOT THE SPECIAL EDITION DVD of this with the booklet =D I SOOO LOVE IT! wonderful thread! OF course it does have its weak points...and i have to admit its GRATING to have to watch and listen to that blonde bimbo . Its a powerful film about addiction and madness and loss....more so than having to do with the sex pistols and the whole punk/rock era.
I will post my thoughts here later on when i am free =D

ps. i was the REAL NANCY IN SIDS LIFE! lol

Hi crystalcallas thanks for your thoughts, you're right about it being 'a powerful movie about addiction, madness and loss', I wasn't too lucid when I decided to rant about how much I hate Nancy.

What's in the special edition DVD? Mine is only in Dolby 2.0 'surround' with no special features at all. And no booklet! :p

I forgot to mention the themes which you covered in one sentence quite nicely, thanks for that too. I edited that first post to clean up a couple of things and add the bit at the end which is really why I wanted to post in the first place (but forgot about).

(I'd also like to apologise to Gary Oldman for insinuating he only lost weight and spiked his hair to play the part, I don't know where that bit came from. I still think he was a great actor and I don't know why he's doing so many crap movies lately. That man had a lot of potential.)

=D

yeah i kinda liked it but i kinda hated it to

i hated the actor who plays Nancy she is just so annoying and whiny, i hope thats not how Nancy was in real life

Overall i thought that the movie had a very powerful message and it defenitely portaryed the tragic life of Sid.

i love that movie but nancy seriously is annoying. i think it woulda been tight to have courtney love as nancy 'cause she was had a little teeny weeny part in the film and it woulda been really weird to see her portray another annoying blonde junkie who is with a rockstar... i just think that woulda been cool

heya....i got the DVD in hongkong, its called the Alex Cox Directors Chair Collection (? ) lol or something like that..., also included was a 64 page limited edition book exclusive re: coxs thoughts while making the film etc etc. Special features are an alex cox interview and directors commentary..thats about it. =D Actually ive read about that nancy ho...and ive deduced that she is COMPLETELY totally irritating in real life ...i actually think it is to Chloe webbs benefit that she was just reprehensible in this movie...that only goes to show she is a very convincing actress ...and too bad for her but the stigma of her role is gonna stick to her for life like a parasite :/ ( i just CANT get that crumpled up Nancy poodle face off of my head LOL!!!!! i dont blame Sid at ALL for killing her I probably would too ! ) Seriously.

Jon Savage ( the author of England's Dreaming: Anarchy, Sex Pistols, Punk Rock and Beyond (1991) wrote the following commentary on the movie wc i quote :

He (Cox) has enough respect for his characters to treat their mutual delusion with love and sympathy, and to chart the rejection that has brought them to this. But he’s too smart not to interject a note of politics, as ever in this film, spoken by a black man: “Smack is the great controller, keeps people stupid. When they could be smart. You guys got no right to be strung out on that stuff. YOU could be selling healthy anarchy. Long as you addicts, you be full of shit.”

And on the other hand,Sid & Nancy captures the almost childlike tenderness between two teens who, despite their violent, flaring nihilism, had the innocent idealism that gets bruised by life. Their relentless trajectory could only end one way. The script takes the most plausible course, that Nancy’s death was accidental, but that the pair was in such an emotional and physical tailspin that the line between intention and accident is forever blurred. The film’s core relationship is handled with perception and sensitivity. It’s hard at this point in time to find anyone with a good word to say for Nancy, but there is no doubt that she and Sid loved each other.

yup i love this bonafide cult classic to bits =D

LOL! I love Sid

i used to be able to watch this.... now after hearing her voice again and again it makes me want to either- a. smash tv with large object or b. crawl into fetal position and rock
all depends on how the rest of the day is going

but i did like oldman's preformance, somewhat noteable
and nancy is buried near my hometown so it was an obligation to watch the movie that turned into a true liking of the flick
