so they say that this film, made in 2003 for television (why tv i don't know), will probably be ingmar bergman's last. which is a shame, but at least it'll let him go out on top.
like akira kurosawa's brilliant final film dreams (yume, 1990), saraband is a moving, nuanced and reflective piece, but at the same time it shows all the cinematic qualities that made bergman such a genius. and it's all still there.
i'll write more later, but i seriously suggest everybody see this if they get the chance. it's my pick of the melbourne international film festival so far out of the ten or fifteen that i've seen.
