Film: Road to Perdition

I watched this for the first time last night and I was pleasantly suprised. Its a completely different role for Tom Hanks, well from what I've seen, and he played the part of a hitman really well. I was in two minds watching it in the first place cause I didn't think he could pull it off. Paul Newman's performance was also stunning - he palys a mob leader with conviction.

Its a very dark and sorrowful movie right up until the end - even at the end when you think you know whats going to happen it leaps out and suprises you - I was expecting such a sad ending.

I'm not sure why, but I'm indifferent towards this movie. I didn't dislike it, but it didn't really do it for me either. If looked at as a gangster movie (which I don't really consider it) it wouldn't be able to hold up to some others.

I think if you look at it through the eyes of say The Godfather and other such movies then you are going to be disapointed - I think its more than a gangster movie - its a family's struggle within the ganster world and their ultimate survival.

I agree with you. This movie is just ok. I wish tit would show more violence or "hits" to show how ruthless Hanks' character could be.

There has never really been a movie about the Irish mob, at least that I can think of, until this. Most of them are about the Italian mob and the Irish mob was just as bad and in most cases worse. I hope some day they make a movie about Whitey Bulger and the Boston Irish Mob, that would make a great movie.

I heard that it was based on Lone Wolf and Cub, a samurai movie where he takes care of a little boy.

personally i think haste is right on and i also think casino ripped goodfellas.

i thought this was average on the edge of boring and slow
hanks played the hitman well, the little boy was fine... theres no glaring errors or anything in this movie it just didnt do much for me
the one high point is the ending. the real unhappy ending. no smiles and rainbows here and that makes me smile. i love the unhappy endings.

I enjoyed it. I found the characters interesting and the storyline was so-so but solid. I especially got a kick out of Jude Law and Tom Hanks as a pair of contract killers. See it for the acting (and it has a decent ending). It's 3 star movie, but only because of the acting. Otherwise it would be a 2 star, very average, mob movie. It's good to see people still doing mob films, but not trying to compete w/ any of the already outstanding classics (since they're so firmly "the best").

Miller's Crossing was fantastic - behind only Godfather, II and Goodfellas in the crowded mafia movie scene.

I couldn't agree more with you!! However, I truly enjoying Road to Perdition. I really liked how we saw the whole movie through the eyes of a child. It's a powerful movie and I LOVE the end scene.
