Yet another movie someone had to drag me to watch, because I saw the trailer and thought "garbage." Blah, blah, blah, bad seed type of thing in the form of a little girl.
I was 100% wrong. This is the best suspense/horror movie I think I have seen since maybe.... well, it's hard to say because they're mostly garbage. This one is not. THis is an exellent movie that was very well done in every way. It felt like an American horror movie, but every time the cliches had the chance to hit, they didn't. There are a few scenes that are particularly disturbing without any sort of violence or menace whatsoever. This "evil orphan" has layers, unlike an evil orphan you might find in a garbage movie. She is a real person, and gradually her character is revealed, and you can even react with empathy to her situation once you learn more about... her situation.
Spoiler alert:

The plot twist came as a complete surprise, and I particularly liked the way they introduced her sexuality before the revelation, leaving the audience very uncomfortable (including myself) for a moment of excellent filmmaking there during the black dress scene with the father. I think the filmmakers spent an excellent amount of time showing how her violent, sociopathic streak blended with her sexual suppression using just the art the father finds hidden on her wall. It was done very well, and you get the sense that she wanted these things for herself, but her growth disorder coupled with a generally psychopathic tendency which may have been spawned from this disorder (along with growing up in a largely uncaring, quiet, and somewhat marginalized Estonia) added to her isolation and pain. Very interesting stuff, and definitely a movie you can fall into as opposed to get bored at.
