I know nothing about this movie, expect the cast, the gorgeously long runtime and that the title is meant to be all in capitals, but hot damn, i can't fucking wait to be Lynchefied again.

some more here
and here

and this darkhorizons article has tiny slithers of info:
'ME' just completed two days as a featured extra on the new film, "Inland Empire" directed by David Lynch and starring Harry Dean Stanton, Laura Dern and newcomer Terryn Westbrook. Here's his full report:

"The film has been filming since 2003, at which time my sister-in-law was an extra. Having taken off time from work to have a baby, she only did the couple of days In Dec '03 when Lynch shot for several days just out of LA (most of the film was shot in Poland) and did no more. When the opportunity arose for extras again - she declined, but I decided to look into it. What do you know? I got two days work.

I didn't get the script, we were only given a BREAKDOWN of our scene, and that's all. Lynch said very LITTLE to us on both days. The DP was more sociable, and the casting director was lovely. What I can gather is that it's a Twin Peaks-like mystery about a woman that dissapears near the San Gab mountains.

We did auditorium scenes - crowd, typical red-robed curtains behind lounge act - which went over three days, though I was only available for two. The task was to basically sit, in awe, of the performance in stage - played, comically - though I'm assuming my smile will be overshadowed by my look of awe. Not that you'll see my in the finished cut, I'm row P - right-back, near entrance. It's a REALLY dark theatre (though not theatre, just a set near San Gabriel mountains here) too.

We do hear music BUT it's not coming from the singer's mouth. She lip-synches, and I believe they fix it all later - - - or something. I didn't recognize the singer/actress. An older man was there directing ? her music.

The film was shot on Digital Video, so I imagine it's going to look VERY cool. It's an experimental film for Lynch, so it is hard to say how it will go (and at one stage I believe it was going to be made for DavidLynch.com only), but it will be interesting to see the finished product - no less.

Laura Dern was on the set on the second day, I think she's going to be playing a role in the film too - maybe even a starring one? - and Kyle MacLachlan (barely recognizable, because of his SILVER hair!) turned up too late afternoon on the Thursday.

The DP, who I'd met at lunch on the Wed and talked to a group of us (he was GREAT!) said David and Kyle are thinking about doing some "Dale Cooper" telemovies - the dude he played on TV. Nothing to do with Twin Peaks, I guess, just that character."

Allegedly it sucks. Big dissapointment, as I like his other movies.

It's not like Lynch got lots of good press for his previous work.

i missed chances to see it in LA, ill wait for the dvd, rather watch a 3 hour movie at home anyways. *n' the title/location is cool, i think it can fit the mood well, big up riverside/san bernardino

I saw this last week. It was an arduous journey, to say the least at 178 minutes. However, Lynch manages to give you his signature creepy crawlies for the entire length of the film. While this was probably his least coherent film to date plot-wise, it was more an exercise placing the main character into different roles and cataloging how it changes the her. Laura Dern is pretty amazing and once again Lynch proves how well he can direct women. This isn't for the casual Lynch fan, but if you're in the mood for a visual feast while being creeped out, don't miss this one.

What does it compare to (if anything) from his back catalogue in terms of linearity of plot and abstract metaphor/symbolism vs reality in scenes (if that makes sense).

I really loved Blue Velvet, Mullholland Drive, Eraserhead, and Twin Peaks. If it's reminiscent of those then I'm sold. Lost Highway (despite having an amazing soundtrack) didn't do it for me at all, I just couldn't get into it.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen Lost Highway, so I'm unable to derive a comparison with that particular film. If Mulholland Drive had more linearity of plot / reality than abstract metaphor/symbolism, this is just the opposite. Basically, if the last forty minutes or so of Mulholland Drive didn't turn you off and you want to see what Lynch does with more of the abstract and less of the linear plot, you'll probably want to watch it. I can't say if you're going to like it or not, but if you really liked all the films you listed, as well as Twin Peaks, you owe yourself a viewing of Inland Empire. I must say I thought about the movie for days after watching it. I'll be having a repeat viewing when it's released on DVD, that's for sure.

I think you can still see this in Chicago as well as a few other cities right now. I believe this is the last round of theaters it will be showing at before going into DVD production. I haven't seen it, 3hrs of Lynch's more abstract stuff would be intimidating. If I'm in Chicago and have the time, I'll probably dose on some psychedelic and check it out. From the descriptions I've heard, that seems like the best approach to take towards watching this film--just enjoy the aesthetic feelings of the moment and don't worry about figuring out the mystery, which in much of Lynch's work is subordinate to tone, atomosphere, etc..

I had no idea it was even out. Guess I'll have to wait for the DVD...

If you're around Chicago, you're still in luck. There are still showings at the Music Box until this Thursday. I kinda want to see it again but I don't know if I can commit another 3 1/2 hours. Here are the release months for the rest of the planet taken from wikipedia.
