Film: I, Robot

I saw a lengthy trailer for this at the sneak preview showing last night of Kill Bill Vol. 2. This movie looks really, really good!

I have not read Asimov's book but just the concept is cool as hell. Set in the future, man has designed a robotic work force to take care of all those menial, minimum wage jobs nobody liked anyway. One of these robots winds up accused of murdering a human, which they are supposed to be designed not to be capable of.

Somehow, this sets off a mass revolution of all the worker bots and a showdown ensues.

Anyone heard anything about this?

I saw the preview at kill bill as well. I was honestly appalled that they're calling this I Robot. Yup, no robot revolt in that book. I can't imagine there could be any resemblance to the book apart from the three laws.

Part of the genius of Asimov's book was that he avoided the obvious plot device of having an all out war between humans and robots. Instead he pursues the much more interesting consequences of having robots of varying design and intelligence adhere strictly to the three laws.

Not that I have a problem with robot wars, they just belong in a movie with a different title!

also, apparently the movie is not based on the book of the same name, but is instead a sort of prequel to the stories that make up the entire series.

which is to say: we wrote this movie about robots and wanted people to go see it, so we used this name.

Sounds like something that has already been shown in the ANIMATRIX. Technically this movie is the Matrix Prequel!

That seems to be the case alright. I got really excited when I heard that this was being made and then I saw the trailer and realised that what we have is a bland cop movie with the most tenuous of links to the book... the three laws, Afred Lanning and a decidedly glamourous Susan Calvin.

I'll probably see it anyhow, but I'm setting myself up for a Minority Report style disappointment.

I, Robot has a very cool concept. but if i was a robot i would harm people constantly. don't judge me.

I, Robot

I came across this book a couple of weeks ago in a charity shop. It's by Isaac Asamov and it's about society's attempts to create the perfect servants in the 2030's and about how robots are persecuted in this era. Intriguingly I found out today that it's being released as a movie later this year with Will Smith in the title role. Anyone else heard of it? I certainly hadn't until I stumbled across it out of the blue.......

Saw this tonight at a sneak preview. Great film!

I always hate talking about these movies I see early, cause I am afraid to review it thoroughly without giving any spoilers.

So, yeah. Definitely worth going to see.

Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto

Will Smith's character is a bit of a nostalgia buff in this film. For example, he really likes his Converse All-Stars. I *so* wanted them to include a scene where he goes to a nightclub and busts out with his robot moves on the dancefloor. That would have been great.

Saw this tonight after a friend dragged me to it and payed for my ticket. :p

It ended up being not as bad as I expected. The sci-fi premise was pretty damned cool (but i'm kind of a sucker for that sort of thing) and well, it was executed in typical "will smith summer blockbuster" fashion. I was laughing through a lot of it at the cheese but that was part of the fun I guess.

Anyway, I gave it two stars. If someone offers to pay for you to see it, I suggest going. :D

I thought it was pretty bad. The plot was extremely weak and predictable, and I still can't really fathom why they put that kid from Even Stevens in it; his part was so neglible and did nothing plotwise except provide an excuse for Will Smith to shoot robots. Definitely has nothing to do with Asimov's work except for the Three Laws, which makes me wish they'd used a different title. If you want a movie that will actually make you think about machine intelligence, I suggest Bicentennial Man. If you like plotless, mindless crap with bad acting then you should definitely check this out.

I saw this a few days ago.

I ( a science fiction fan ) give this a two out of four possible stars.

Only the digital eye candy kept this over one star.

If I were a cynic, I would say that this was nothing but product placement. When a film's character actually names the brand and model of a product it's a safe bet the brand payed a lot of money for the priviledge. And I am a cynic.

I actually enjoyed the film, which suprised me. Smith wasn't too grating and the film wasn't as dumb as I expected it to be. Plus I love sci-fi so a big thumbs up for the cool eye-candy. If possible I'd give it 2.5 stars, but closer to 2 than 3.
