Howl's Moving Castle

Showing on the closing night of the Sydney Film Festival!

The new film by Hayao Miyazaki, which has already broken all records in Japan (so I hear), should get a wide western release eventually since Spirited Away received the Oscar, and it stars the voices of Billy Crystal, Christian Bale and Lauren Becall.

Excited? I am.

edit: A mate already has it on DVD, but this'll definintely be a big screen experience.

i'd love to see it... however the SFF bastards appear to be charging $30 a head, therefore they can gf.

Don't worry, it *should* get a wide release. .... but then again, i thought the same thing for Ghost in The Shell 2..... fuckers

got to check out a free screening of this movie tonight and I must say that it is all I expected from the master of animation, Miyazaki. though it drags a little over all its a damn good movie. check it out.

this is dr. funkenstien signing out

I so can't wait to see it....the little indie theater in town didn't bring it yet, though, so it looks like I'll have to wait :(

my new favorite Miyazaki film!
it's just beautiful!
the animation and storyline had me totally absorbed
definitely needs to be seen on the big screen
if you are a fan of anime you must see this film

Amorroark, my mother, eight year old brother, and I went to see this a couple weeks ago. My brother really likes all of Miyazaki's movies' and loved it, as did my mother. Amorroark and I were more confused than anything though. I guess I (we) just don't get his style of storytelling. The animation was really good though.

Wide Aus release 22/09/05.

hmmm.... will i wait or get a copy on dvd first (like sin city).....tough one.

While it may be stating the obvious, a subbed, fairly high quality version of howl's moving castle can be found by anyone who takes the time to look.

Personally, i'm torn about this film. From an animation standpoint, the movie is simply breathtaking. However, it's not always clear what exactly the film is about, and it's full of plot holes and loose ends. It's really a disapointment in that regard compared to myzaki's last two films.

Still, it's an easy film to appreceate, even if it's hard to really love.

NOT my Fave Miyazaki Film

I have to say I was somewhat dissappointed with HOWL. That dissappointment didn't kick in until the final 10 minutes, right when I realized the story goes nowhere.

BUT...

It is still worth seeing in a theatre as it is unquestionably the most beautiful & breathtaking film of the year. Even though the story sucks the characters are interesting, individual scenes are compelling, the film is entertaining throughout & the vocal talent on the English language version that I saw was exceptional. A word about the 2 versions--this is one of the few foreign language films where I would say see the dubbed version. All animation is dubbed, so seeing the subtitled version will only avert your eyes from the beautiful imagery which is the whole reason to see HOWL in the first place.

The ONLY foreign language animated film that should be heard in its original tongue is the Japanese film GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES, as in that film the vocals of actual children were recorded & the animation was done later. The English language version of GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES is pretty powerful stuff but in it's original Japanese it's devastating.

The film was pretty cool. But, I agree with the general consensus in regards to plot holes. The last ten minutes were just a horrible excuse for tying a story together.

I don't think Miyazaki can make a bad film.

This was probably his most aesthetically pleasing film to date; it's just gorgeous. You'll be blown away visually and the sound editing is excellent. The story was a little goofy and hard to follow some times, but not terribly so. The ending wasn't shitty, it just could have unfolded better. The narrative needed a little tweaking maybe. Oh well. My favorite Miyazaki is probably The Castle of Cagliostro because Lupin's a bad ass motherfucker and his two homies, especially the one with the sword, are beyond awesome.

I saw this a little while ago during SBS' Miyazaki marathon. I was told to watch it by so many people and I really didn't think it would be something I would enjoy... I'm so glad I took the time to watch it. Amazing. I was totally blown away.

i am sure happy i was high when i watched this.

great story, quirky nonsense all the way through it and wonderfully imagery. that, and i'm always a sucker for a soppy love story.

i bet the book's better :)
