So, I've been hearing about HELLBENT, the first and only gay horror/slasher fic. Now, keep in mind, I know perfectly well that there are kinda gay slasher movies... and certainly, there's the cliche of the lesbian killer or gay killer or ambiguous killer with 3-beer-queer issues... but this is an honest-to-gosh gay slasher fic with real gay characters.
I've always wanted that. I've always wondered what a gay Halloween would have been like... or even a gay American Pie... or a gay Scarface.
Well... now we know... kinda...
And the main characters aren't all just carbon copies of each other, they have amazing depth for a slasher fic. There's four main friends, and, surprisingly, their friendship is touching. Seriously. It's almost heartbreaking. And that's how well-written this flick is. You actually worry about them, alittle. I mean, you know... for a movie and all.
I had heard about Hellbent awhile ago, but the screen-shots used were all smiley shots, so I naturally thought it was a kind of parody on the thrasher model. 2 weeks ago, I found out that a good part of the HALLOWEEN/NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET production team actually made it... colour me piqued!
Of course, I couldn't wait for the DVD release (the wait for ANOTHER GAY MOVIE has been excruciating), so I downloaded the torrent. I'm glad I did and as soon as the DVD is released, I'll be buying it.
Note to Film/Music Execs: See? DLing only affects CRAP movies and music, not the good, fun shit!)
The basic jist of the movie? Well, imagine Friday the 13th... but in the Castro during a huge Halloween street fair and a bevy of seriously beautiful boys. Even the nerdy blonde is loveable.
It's well-shot, well-written, well-acted, well-everything. The effects are nigh-perfect and the sound isn't forced or ADR'd incorrectly (ala THE CRAPENANT, er I mean, THE COVENANT). The lead is kind of annoying in his (s)mothering of his friends. Sometimes they spend too much time doing the wink-wink nudge-nudge with the 'look how we use the slasher cliche but with gay boys' thing, but other than that, it's a solid offering. Another cool thing about the movie is that none of the male leads are gay (at least publicly, unless I've missed something), yet the make-out scenes are not stiff and they don't look like they simply do not want to be there (hello, Jake and Heath). They are believably, 21st-century-ly gay. Ooops, I forgot, one of the characters is bisexual and I think the other likes to fuck trannies. But still, they seem 3D and real; Hank Harris' freak-out in the bathroom scene is very well done.
Just like all flicks of this genre, the ending is rather... whatever. Not bad, just... whatever. But, I actually expect that; the set-up and middle execution of slasher movies are usually always the best part. I'd rather have these characters in a regular series dealing with their relationship/friendship. But still, it doesn't take away from the other splendid parts of the movie.
Now, I'm really excited about Another Gay Movie. I've heard positive reviews and, if the current crop of 'use-the-Hollywood-standard-to-fuck-with-the-Hollywood-standard' is anything to go by, Queer Cinema is finally making some shit that fags have needed to make and see for a long time. Ku-fuckin-Dos, queens!
Oh, in the meantime, here's the previews from both HELLBENT and ANOTHER GAY MOVIE. Enjoy!
So, all-on-all, I definitely recommend this flick, even if you're tired of the slasher model. And, no worries, it's not as graphic as QAF at all.
