film: 2001: A Space Odyessy -- What?

The last 20 or 25 minutes of this movie is really purrty, but I dont get it. Im thinking he went through some sort of time travel, but I could be wrong. And that big rectagular black thing left by an alien civilization never seemed to have its question answered.

Any one got an idea what happened during the last parts of this movie? 8(

The black monolith has the same effect on modern man near the end of the film as it did with prehistoric man near the start of the film.

By the end of the 3001 book we still don't know what it is.
