afaik, true gonzo is where the videographer makes their presence known, often talking to those onscreen and/or becoming involved in the sex. for example, a point of view blowjob being given to the camera operator. pseudo gonzo is what you described in your post and yes the term is borrowed from thompson's work, as he wrote himself into his pieces.
