Rum got its name by being shortened from the term rumbullion - an old English term for fighting or 'uproar'. The theory is that old English sailors in the 17th Century would be in the Caribbean, drinking this drink made from molasses and get rowdy and fight. Therefore, the drink was called rumbullion, eventually being truncated to 'rum'
