I've always used to be a pretty active kid, but i guess i sort of calmed down in the last year. Well, anyways, the past 2 fridays i went clubbing and was going crazy, like dancing really crazy, well, not like insanely crazy, cause it was mostly hip hop and reggae, not any house or techno. Anyways, by the end of the night, i'm like drenched in sweat and it's disgusting. Does anyone know any good tricks to try and help with my sweating. I try to stay away from sodium as much as a i can, but other than that i don't really know what else to do.

Why cut out the sodium? If you're sweating a lot lack of sodium can lead to hyponatremia (or better known as drinking too much water, but really its the water that dilutes the sodium levels in your blood plasma which in turn leads to hyponatremia).

If you have a lot of muscle you'll generate a lot of heat which will lead to your body trying to cool you down more. I wouldn't recommend losing muscle just because of this, that'd just be stupid.

Other more obvious things that you may have already tried:

- Wear lighter clothing
- Take regular breaks, step outside the club for 15 minutes and let your body cool down
- Drink cool/cold water to try and get your body temperature down
- Take a towel with you and 'sponge'. Its a technique that runners use to increase the exposed surface area of your skin to the cooling effects of evaporation (water/air cooling). You remove excess sweat [with the towel] and your body tends to cool a lot better.

Did you ever consider you may have a fever because of sickness? This can also lead to increased sweating/body temperature.

Someone once told me that sweating alot is a sign of good health, maybe wear some clothing that hides it abit?

^^Word...I've heard that many many times, from my doctors, my parents, lol .....I live in the tropics tho so sweating is inevitable. I love a good sweat tho when I exercise , there is seriously something wrong if you dont sweat at all. Just try not to wear light colored shirts that show sweat (god this is one of the lessons I've learned !) and always have some talcum powder at hand to give yourself a good dusting when you feel like it .

I am the type of person who never sweats. Its really weird. I get slightly sweaty on my upper lip and head when its like 10000 degrees outside, but during the winter or even moderately warm weather, I can go running and barely get the slightest bit of dampness to my skin. I actually hate this! I want to get sweaty..to me working out really hard and not even breaking a sweat feels like Im not doing anything..and I want to sweat out all to toxins!
I guess what Im saying is some people just sweat more than others. Im not sure if there is anything you can do to prevent this, but I dont think you need to. If I see someone on the dance floor all nice and sweaty I think its pretty hot! PLus when you workout and sweat your body releases all kinds of sexy pheramones...mmmm. :)

Also it just occured to me, if you're using any sort of amphetamines or stimulants while you're out of course you're going to sweat more your body temp is going to be higher.

btw its ur underarms sweat alot normally even when ur not really doing anything and u use anti-persperant.....stop using it, first off the ingredient aluiminum something... is not good for you and second off it just blocks the sweat glands and eventually u prob sweat more. i used to have really bad underarm sweat, like drops just falling off, then i switched to just deodorant and problem was solved i never got sweaty at all under my arms ever again to this day ( cept when workin out or something) its bc the anti-persperant blocks the sweat glands for so long that it produces more sweat to make the body persperate. so if u use it u will end up with more sweat under ur arms than u did if u didnt use anything at all

I was like you last year, could run in the mid-day sun until i puked and not be sweaty. That changed this year, only difference i can think between now and then is that i'm alot healthier :).

Number 1 thing i hate about sweating so much: the gel in my hair goes all over my face and ruins my hairstyle. (yes i'm a vain fucker ;) )

Interesting. I got a little sweatier the last time I ran. Maybe getting in better shape is key.

extreme sweating

When I was a teenager and even in my early 20s I hardly perspired at all, even when I was running/jogging in hot weather. I used to be fairly thin. But as the years have passed, I have inevitably gained weight and now sweat profusely when I exercise. In some ways it's probably healthier because I'm getting rid of toxins; but I think it's becuase I'm now older and slightly overweight which probably puts a strain on my heart.

I hate sweating because it makes me feel disgusting and smelly. I don't stay fresh for as long so I feel honky a lot sooner too. I sometimes have to take two baths a day to feel fresh. I particularly hate the fact that I sweat a lot in my crotch. :o It also means that I can never work out in the same clothes more than once. I guess it's mainly part of getting older. :\

Those of you who barely sweat now will almost certainly begin to sweat more as you get into your late 30s.

My guy is a little overweight and I am very thin. He does sweat a lot when we workout so perhaps the weight thing does have a lot to do with it.

I just read an article on Adipose Tissue that seems to suggest that if you are higher in body fat you generate more heat because when fat is metabolised as an energy source it is directly done so with heat as a by product.

This would reflect as increased sweating when excercising (dancing included).

The only part of the article that relates to this thread is about heat production but the whole article is worth a read.

URL is at: http://www.sportsci.org/encyc/adipose/adipose.html

Another thing also to consider is heat aclimitisation. I'm not sure on what effect it'd have on you if you're just dancing and not actually an athlete so perhaps someone with a scientific background can enlighten me.

Anyway, if you were to live in a cool enviroment with summer not getting really that hot then being exposed to a hot environment (ie. a club) and then performing excercise could induce excess sweating as the body tries to cool itself down. The person would need to go through a heat adjustment period (10-14 days from what I've read) in a hot environment in which time they'd be excercising and heat aclimitising which would have the end result of their body being more efficient at cooling itself and reducing sweating.

Conversley, those who live in warmer environments are more heat adjusted and would actually sweat less when exposed to a hot envrionment.

Information regarding this can also be found on the same site as above, URL:

Thanks a lot everyone. And yeah, i'm from New England and it's brick outside right now, so that might be part of the reason. I usually go crazy the whole night and it sucks at the end when girls want to give you a hug and what not and you're like drenched in sweat.
