The autopsy report for Elijah McClain, an unarmed Black man who died while in police custody in Colorado three years ago, has been changed to update the cause of death from “undetermined” to “complications of ketamine administration following forcible restraint,” Adams County Chief Coroner Monica Broncucia-Jordan said Friday.

In August 2019, McClain, a 23-year-old massage therapist, was walking home from a store when he was apprehended by Aurora police officers responding to a “suspicious person” call. Police said McClain had resisted and he was placed into a carotid hold.

Paramedics diagnosed McClain with “excited delirium” and administered the powerful sedative ketamine. He suffered a heart attack on the way to the hospital. Three days later, he was declared brain dead.

"Simply put, this dosage of ketamine was too much for this individual and it resulted in an overdose, even though the blood ketamine level was consistent with a ‘therapeutic’ concentration,” Cina wrote. “I believe that Mr. McClain would most likely be alive but for the administration of ketamine.”

Elijah Mclain from CO killed by police with....ketamine?

#1 giving someone in "exited delirium" a powerful hallucinogen that causes you to not even feel bullet holes, doesn't seem like the best choice. We're they out of PCP and LSD?

#2 where were the benzos, barbs, or antipsychotics.

You give someone like this midazolam (an IV benzo) in this situation.

Or you just restrain them. If it was a true ketamine OD this was done on purpose as a murder. Nobody dies from a standard k dosage

another cop murder investigated by the cops ruled to be justified.

And I don't buy it anyways. Ketamine is extremely hard to overdose on.

Hmm. It says the level of ketamine in his blood was consistent with a therapeutic dose range, but I have so many questions. Who administered it? The cops?? It doesn't mention paramedics.

He was in a choke hold for how long? He was in delirious psychosis?

Lots of questions, but yeah who the hell gave him ketamine in that situation??

Maybe the ketamine caused him to act even more erratically which resulted in a tighter choke hold. Sad...

Exactly.

It's just how they concluded George Floyd overdosed coincidentally on fentanyl as he was screaming out for his mama fully alert as his neck was crushed not allowing him to get enough air....while his blood levels were no where near fatal for a fentanyl user.

Late to this thread. The article I read stated that after the police roughed him up, the EMS were the ones who administered the ketamine. IIRC the article also stated it was a therapeutic dose for a 250 lb man.

Several tragic deaths that have falsely been linked to Ketamine administration have caused a misinformed public outcry to ban the drug in the pre-hospital environment.
