Easter - what does it mean to you?

I don’t celebrate Easter; personally I find it a bit of a joke. As a kid it was all about chocolate and Easter bonnet parades and more chocolate, somewhere in there I learnt that the Easter of today sprung from our own pagan rituals to hail the beginning of spring, and today I know it means a day or so off work where I get to go to the beach or lay by the pool, drink it up and still collect a full day’s wages. =D

But I’ve often been called a cynical bitch... so Easter, what does it mean to you? Does anybody actually celebrate it either religiously or hedonistically? If so, why?

It means that my gf's bday is coming up, and to save up for a present.

Easter to me has always been about clothes, my parents have always baught us a new outfit for easter .. sort of like getting a start on your winter clothes (its turning wintery here at the moment) .. obviously it started because little kids need new winter clothes every year ..

but we have managed to still keep this a tradition and demand a new outfit for easter :)

Easter this year is good because I get paid for 7 days and I only have to work 5 days. =D

I'm not religious, so it's only a holiday break for me. I've tell everybody that I don't want any Chocolate Eggs as I have been developing that post-raving buldge.... errr!

Well, I guess I might go against the trend then.

Easter has been about reflecting and appreciating for as long as I can remember. I recall being a little girl and crying on Good Friday because Jesus died. I always, always take the time out over the course of the weekend to think about what sacrifices have been made to make my life better (not just in a religious sense, but all sacrifices - Easter just poses a good setting for thinking about it). I don't do Lent because I'm not Catholic, but I do "celebrate" each day in the Easter long weekend for what it represents in the Christian faith.

It's been a long time since I went to an Easter mass of any description, but I still like to make sure I think about the things mass would be telling me to think about anyway.

I eat easter eggs from about January onwards, so I can take them or leave them when Easter actually arrives. I do love a good easter egg hunt though ;) And toasted hot cross buns (fruitless) with butter are ace.

As a side note, my fiance is Catholic and he partook in Lent, ate much disgusting food on Shrove Tuesday and is going to Good Friday mass with his family. So I guess the religious side of it hasn't died out completely in favour of chocolate and days off.

I'm greek orthodox and Easter (which is on the weekend after Skippy Easter ;) ) has always played a big part in mine and my family's life. I'm not really religious but Easter has always held a special place in my heart and always will for many personal reasons.

When i was little easter meant nothing more than getting chocolate. And when my cousins came over i would have to share mine withthem, because they are orthordox jews and make a point of not celebrating...

Usually it means 3/5 of sweet FA, but this year it means Infected Mushroom and the promise of much fun... :)

easter is a time for parties for me. i do not celeberate the religious aspect of it. although i have no problems going to any religious festivals if invited.

although i disagree with the concept with religion, i think the concept of famlies and freinds gathering and celebrateing life is paramount.

in that sense i love easter because it is a chance to spend a great amount of time with your friends partying. in a sense, the values and the lifestyle that goes along with the **** scene is my religion. for many reasons i would rather spend my easter with my friends as opposed to my family.

well generally ive always thought easter was kinda stupid.. im not particularly fond of chocolate and im not religious.. i think the good old Dead Prophet said it best...

"I was over in Australia during easter, which was interesting. Interesting to note they celebrate Easter the same way we do, comemorating the death and resurection of Jesus...by telling our children a giant bunny rabbit... left chocolate eggs in the night. Now.. I wonder why we're fucked up as a race. Anybody? Anybody got any clues out there? Where do you get this shit from? Y'know.. And why those two things? Why not goldfish left Lincoln-Logs in your sock drawer? As long as we're making shit up, go hog-wild y'know. At least a gold fish with a Lincoln-Log on its back going across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it... "Mummy, i woke up today and there was a Lincoln-Log in me sock drawer.." "Thats the story of Jesus.." Who comes up with this shit??? Ive read the bible, I cant find the word bunny or chocolate anywhere!!!" - Bill Hicks

you all knew it was gonna come up in this thread sooner or later...

easter = fucking ridiculously hard to get a flight home when i want it.. but always a good opportunity to wear my 'happy easter' top with the burning rabbit.

those egg-trains when you're like 5 years old are fucking a though.. i stopped celebrating it when i was old enough to know what it all meant.

*puts her hands up for pesach*
the food's not as fun (i mean seriously, matzos and eggs? what a joke) but if it'd good enough for a rugrats episode, it's good enough for me.

To me, easter means a trip up to my parents place, and a weekend of bushwalking, relaxing and mushie picking.
Just like every other easter!

Andromeda:)

Easter means a few days off to go away with mates and 'celebrate', although none of us are quite sure what the reasons are for our celebration - none of us really care either!!!
