I've been thinking about nootropics recently and am quite interested in trying piracetam as it seems to be the benchmark, you could say what Valium is to benzos.

Is it legal to buy in the UK?

Does anyone use it? Experiences? I'd appreciate the mental boost it supposedly provides.

I only ever tried aniracetum. It didn't greatly impress me though. You can all this stuff on bulknutrition.com. I don't know if they ship to the U.K. but I'm pretty sure that nootropics as such are legal everywhere...

piracetam did nothing positive for me, just gave me nightmares, 'results may vary'...

I use Piracetam, about 2400mg daily along with about 800mg Choline Bitartrate (Piracetam depletes this). It's completely legal.

It's not something that you really notice instantly, it's gradual but if I stop I deffinitely feel the effect wear off. The best thing for me is that it seems to remove that mongy feeling I usually get after waking up which when working stays from 6.30 in the morning untill sometime in the afternoon. That goes and is removed with a sharpness and clarity which in turn means I can think straight and I'm more on the ball.

In that way it's good socially for me because it means that the drug induced bluntness that I get for most of the day goes (it is in no way similiar to the social effect of say coke or speed though). It also helps me at work because I am no longer a thick idiot from one too many sessions and you don't forget stuff you did earlier in the day. Don't get me wrong, you don't turn into some complete genius by any means but it deffinitely helps me.

It does seem to effect ketamine by itself, just don't do it that day if you fancy doing a bit ket. However it doesn't seem to effect ketamine + 2C-B/MDMA at all, and enhances 2C-B and MDMA and pretty much any other psychedelic as far as I know.

Edit - Piracetam tastes like shit, cap it. Choline Bitartrate tastes absolutely lush, it's the most sour thing I've ever put in my mouth. You could almost gag but I've always been a fan of haribo, so who am I to complain?

Sounds like it could be usefull, I always go into uni in the morning like a complete mong, half asleep and sit there braindead for a cpl hours taking nothing in.

Any negative side effects from it?

It's bitter as fuck, so unless you like sitting around capping lots of powder, then you have to bare the taste. I gave up with it, as I never noticed any effects. I may try it, again. I still have half a tub left.

I reckon a few months. I was quite anxious, at the time, so I think maybe that masked any benefits.

Ket not working? Really the only side effect I can think of is that its given some people headaches, but you just need to find the right dose I think (also Chloline helps). As far as I know, its been tested for quite a long time now and to pretty high amounts without any serious side effects at all. It's good for your brain and doesn't seem to pose any risk to your body in normal healthy people.

From wikipedia:

Several meta-reviews of literature on piracetam indicate that piracetam increases performance on a variety of cognitive tasks among dyslexic children, though this may reflect its enhancement of cross-hemispheric communication and of cognitive function in general, rather than a specific improvement in whatever causes dyslexia. Piracetam also seems to inhibit brain damage caused by a variety of factors including hypoxia and excessive alcohol consumption.[2][3]

Piracetam has been studied in an extensive number of clinical experiments, and has shown positive results in the treatment of post-stroke aphasia, epilepsy, cognitive decline following heart and brain surgery, dementia,[4] and myoclonus,[5][6]and some believe that understanding the mechanism through which it works can teach us about the role of inter-hemispheric communication in the brain.[citation needed]

As of June of 2006, piracetam is not regulated in the United States (it is neither a controlled substance nor a prescription drug but instead sold as a dietary supplement)

If the FDA don't mind it can't be all bad.

Except

Due to the effect of piracetam on platelet aggregation, caution is recommended in patients with underlying disorders of haemostasis, major surgery or severe haemorrhage.

Abrupt discontinuation of treatment should be avoided as this may induce myoclonic or generalised seizures in some myoclonic patients.

As piracetam is almost exclusively excreted by the kidneys caution should be exercised in treating patients with known renal impairment. In renally impaired and elderly patients, an increase in terminal half-life is directly related to renal function as measured by creatinine clearance. Dosage adjustment is therefore required in those with mild to moderate renal impairment and elderly patients with diminished renal function.

I suppose it's all down to whether you needed it. Did you have any trouble doing anything remotely complex/keep making mistakes at work etc? That's the main reason why I started taking it and although I still have the odd fuck up, it's helped massively. It's like I wasn't thinking first and making obvious connections and that's helped bridge the gap.

Cheap as fuck mate. Massive tub was somewhere cheaper than £20 on bulknutrition, 700 grams I think. Got to be about a years supply.

:D

Sounds like I should get some of this if it could make me even that little bit more alert in the morning. Some days it takes me hours before my brain seems to start functioning properly and everything clicks into place. Always seem to be a bit dazed and spaced out. :\

Yeah, just to clarify because I've sort of made it sound this way, it's not at all stimulating. Just means the clarity is there which to me is the biggest culprit when you feel thick and monged after a weekend.

Yeah think I need a bit of clarity. I imagine it just makes you feel clearheaded and able to think a bit more instead of feeling drowsy / spaced like I always feel for the first few hours after waking up.

Yeah that's exactly how it is for me.

Well I'm sold. I'll have money next week so I shall purchase and report back. :)

Keep at it and don't expect a magical instant improvement. You will just notice that you aren't as bad as you were.

You will also need to do some attack doses. I was doing 3000mg + Chloline when I got up then another 1600mg a few hours later

On the subject of cognitive enhancers, what else can fellow Blers recommend? I'm looking for something to aid in concentration.
