Hey. I vape e-cigs (5% nic disposables) and smoke regular cigarettes when people offer me at parties and social events - keep that in mind.
Ive had covid in the beginning of the year. Recovered, mild case. I didnt even take meds to treat it. A week goes by and I start coughing a lot, to the point where Id puke and hurt my throat.
I go to the doc thinking he is going to prescribe me some antibiotic and id go back home. I end up being in the hospital for 7 days - bacterial and viral pneumonia (at the same time) + H3N2 (flu) + ground glass in the lung + lung sepsis.
It was said to me that timing was key and I arrived at the hosp with 30%ish chance of being intubated - I asked my doc what were the chances of, if intubated, ending up dead. He said that, even if I had to be intubated, 97% chances id get out and recover. I wasnt intubated, so I presume my odds of surviving were like 99% - which at times made me think nothing serious happenned, when, in fact, my case was severe.

Im home now and have been for over a week, but the nicotine cravings are the worst. I bought nicotine gum and nicotine patches, but that caused a lot of nausea. So I threw away the patches and kept the gum in case of cravings.
Long story short, I relapsed and smoked a pack of cigarettes yesterday after having a panic attack. Took 2mg xanax (sublingual) and after 30min bought the cigs. I really cant imagine the idea of never smoking anymore, and that worsens my GAD (Generalised anxiety disorder). At the same time, I feel anxious when I remember I smoked a pack of cigs after what happenned. My head is a complete mess - im glad I, for once, used xanax as its actually suposed to be used (lol). I never smoke cigarettes at home, but since I wanted the nicotine and thought vaping almost killed me, I figured id smoke regular cigarettes - I know they are bad, but if they kill me, it will take decades of smoking. (Im 22 today). Oh, and I also smoked 2 cigs today so far. I Feel ashamed of myself.

So, what are the dangers of smoking like 2-3 cigs a day? Is it better than vaping?
How do I avoid the urge to smoke?
Im on lexapro and diazepam, and have xanax at home in case of panic attacks, so Im already taking something for anxiety and still have bad cravings. Sometimes I feel hopeless about this whole thing. Geez.

First of all I'm sorry that you're experiencing this right now. That fucking sucks.

I smoked for 17 years, quitting in 2020. I tried a lot of different things over probably about 10yrs - vaping (just bought cigs), inhalators, patches, cold turkey - relapsed every time, particularly while drinking or in distress. Like you I struggle with anxiety, couldn't have imagined myself ever successfully quitting.

It was the weirdest thing and it's gonna sound ridiculous because it totally is. What worked was falling asleep to Paul McKenna 'Quit Smoking Today' one night when I'd decided to quit. I smoked half a joint with tobacco about a week later, hated it and never smoked tobacco again. It was fucking bizarre. I still smoke weed with marshmallow leaf once a day, dry vape it or use an eliquid vape with microdose THC instead of nicotine.

I manage cravings by trying to fill my time with things that distract me. For the first couple of months it was a lot of physical activity, but I imagine that's difficult right now so until you feel stronger something that is gentler on the body and keeps your mind occupied is probably wise.

Things to occupy your hands help too like fidget toys/blu tac/putty or whatever, something to mess with. I found that over time where I would normally smoke a cig at my desk for example, by keeping something like that on my desk and messing with it when I needed to, it gradually became as automatic as smoking a cig had been.

I think vaping with nicotine often helps people reduce harm while continuing to consume nicotine as opposed to helping to completely cut out nicotine but that's just my own opinion based on the people I know. It may well be different for others and I'm sure many have quit nicotine completely that way.

If you've had pneumonia it's not a good idea to vape or smoke but I think you know that already. You're literally inhaling fluid which is definitely not gonna be good for pneumonia. I can't imagine inhaling the smoke from any burning material would be a good idea right now either.

Quitting cold turkey is tough but it does get easier over time. I'm confident that you can totally do it and it will help you. It makes stuff taste better, you can smell stuff better, and of course your heart and lungs will thank you. Good luck with it, it was something I found very difficult throughout my life but eventually was the best decision I ever made.

That’s exactly what I wanted to know too.. Is that from long term cigarettes smoke or something else?

How did you get ground glass in your lungs?
That was actually mild. The doctor told me that when people catch a really bad cold / the flu / influenza, they might have ground glass in their lungs and it goes away w/o needing specific treatment. I only know I had this due to tomography - and from what I understood, if u get really sick (flu/corona/influenza/whatevervirus) u will find a little ground glass in the lungs. Im 99.9% sure its not from cigs as im only 22 and started vaping 3 years ago (cigarettes are not a habit)

I couldn’t help but to look this up. It’s a term used by radiologists to describe certain patterns they see in lung CT scan. It doesn’t actually refer to glass literally in the lungs, and if your doctor made you believe otherwise I’d be seeking another one.

No, vaping is definitely a better alternative.
Not sure what makes you think that vaping almost killed you, you just had a bad case of pneumonia.

That being said, getting a good e-cig from a reputable brand and high quality liquid is probably better than using those disposable ones (and cheaper too)

I quit smoking a couple times using Zyban,it totally takes the cravings away ,you just can’t take the second dose late in the day cause you’ll never get to sleep…
