Drug Usage Statistics 2002

I have heard of a heroin drought. But heroin use seems to "be stable, without dropping much in the last few years. Hmmmmm.
Purity dropped drastically, hence peoples habits did too. They're still spending the same amount of $$ on it, it's just nowhere near as pure.

Very, very, VERY interesting stuff!

In 2000, Australia ranked 19th highest in the world in terms of per capita consumption of
alcohol, with approximately 7.8 litres equivalent of pure alcohol consumed per person. This
corresponded to an annual per capita consumption of around 95.0 litres of beer, 19.7 litres of
wine and 1.3 litres of pure alcohol from spirits.

I've long wondered where we fit in internationally in terms of consumption rates...

Cheers Leprechaun!

Around 2001 Melbourne was hit by a huge drought of Heroin it's only just now improving but is still nowhere near the quality of around '98-'00. In 1999 or 2000 the Heroin death toll had beaten the road toll and was turning into an epidemic. Purity in 2001-2002 was found to be around 15% compared to '99 where it was found to be as high as 90%. Also it was extremely cheap, new users could get extremely high of $10 of Smack. During the drought many users turned to meth-amphetamines or pharmacies were inundated with Methadone patients. Unfotunately I was caught up in the Heroin 'explosion' in '98. Then the meth scene.:(

Always interesting to read these sorts of statistics. I just wander how accurate they are?

^ Statistics are just numbers... it's the conclusions inferred from such numbers and extrapolation to future strategies that I worry about most.

It would be a very interesting excercise to compare seizure figures for alternative drugs when examining the effects of supply reduction on users in general. To accurately indicate any shift in user trends towards alternative drugs, this would need to be done at a time when markets have been able to fill the void, i.e. not instantly a shortage commences. If this was compared to user surveys, I'm sure a common pattern would emerge where most users turned to alternatives rather than give up entirely.

If such patterns were shown to have already occurred in Australia, this is surely evidence that the current system should not be the foundation for future policy.

I guess the major argument against this will be; as law enforcement and detection improve, we will one day see an extended period of no availability. Most hardline antidrug supporters must be able to envisage a world which has been stripped completely of illegal drugs for years, a world where people have just forgotten about them or simply can't obtain them and wouldn't dare trying. An absolutely unrealistic view, but not all that uncommon I fear

As BT mentioned, stats can be used for anything. It not only what figures are selected, its also how they are extrapolated and presented.

What would really kill the law enforcement and detection mechanisms would be if there where a super potent substance. Along the lines of MDMA but active in micro gram doses. In which case 10g of the substance would have around 10000 effective dosages. You could sneak that in very easily. For a small group of people 1g would be enough.

I suspect that such drugs are on their way and that this will be the answer to more advanced detection methods.

1028 bit encrypted e-mail is already available to avoid most, if not all detection.

10 grams = 10,000 milligrams = 10,000,000 micrograms :D Even a few milligrams of such a powerful drug should be enough for multiple doses for a smallish group of people if it's active at the microgram level... :D but measuring the dose becomes rather more difficult at this level of precision. Then you have to either invest tens of thousands of dollars or more on a super accurate balance, or turn to solvent based dosing methods. There's just not much room for error in dosages with highly concentrated or powerful drugs.

Solvent based methods with 1000:1 dilution ratio should be good enough. In which case you would dramatically remove the error.

Once it becomes too difficult to import and distribute large quantities of powder, this is the most likely direction that manufacturing will take. :)

Now we just need to wait for this new super potent drug to be invented. =D

Hi Everyone, first time poster :)

Doesn't LSD fall into the active in micrograms catergory? In which case a 1 gram 'crystal' of the substance could supply around 5000 strong (200µ) doses of LSD. Of course this isn't allowing for degrading LSD purity or potency over time however its a fair estimate.

Welcome to Bluelight res.

LSD is typically active in the tens of micrograms, with a dose of 25ug regarded as the minimum level generally required to stimulate any psycho-activity
