Short story, my wife and I are currently looking into getting Life Insurance plans for us both. My wife takes Tapentadol daily for diagnosed Fibromyalgia. However she is not prescribed the Tapentadol for Fibro, only Lyrica. She has a good source for the Tapentadol and is not prescribed it. So we can’t say on the application that a Dr is giving it to her and shes actually tried a couple of times to get a legit rx for it but the doc refused and prescribed an NSAID instead. She takes what is a normally prescribed dose daily.

The life insurance company will do a drug panel. I am wondering if the Tapentadol might show up? I know its not very commonly used and dont know if its frequently tested for or may simply show up as an opiate. If so, she will likely get refused insurance based on my understanding. If this is the case we might need to go for a no exam life insurance policy, which has higher rates and lower payout. I dont really think that quitting for a week or two will be an option for her as she has a demanding job and doesnt want to deal with withdrawal. Though i may reccomend to her to switch to kratom for a couple of weeks, but I dont know if she’ll like that suggestion. But I know we’ll have much better luck passing the drug screen with just kratom and lyrica in her system.

Anybody with any insight on this? Thanks!

Well.............let me be frank. As long as your wife consumes the tapentadol obviously it will show up...........but it depends on what type of test they use. Tap doesn't show up as a common opioid on a 6 panel ( it has to be tested for on it's own ) but I think it IS on the 12 panel.

So she either quits using to pass the test or you guys go with the higher rate insurance.

This is why bluelight doesn't allow drug testing questions as there is just no way anyone could give you a decent answer. Drug tests depend on the persons biological makeup, the type of drug test they use ( blood, urine, hair, 6 panel, 12 panel, mass spec ) all kinds of different ones. We just can't say for certain who will pass, who won't and WHY they won't.

My advice is have her quit the med until the test and then go back on it if she wants. Or roll the dice....it's up to her. Worst case scenario is she fails the test and you go with the other options. Gotta have priorities man. Whats more important? The cheap life insurance or the non prescribed drugs?

By the way, welcome to bluelight. Sorry your 1st question is one we don't allow. Gonna leave this open for a bit in case you have any other questions. BL allows most everything but sourcing and selling drugs and anything to do with drug testing.

Okay thank you. Sorry, I should have read the rules better.

I do know that they will use a blood test. But im unsure of the specific type

Hey no problem...it's fine. We want to help but it's just one of those subjects where nobody can really help. There are so many variables in a testing situation that nobody can really say with any certainty who will pass and who wont. I wish you much luck in whatever you and your wife choose and maybe she can just quit the tap for a week or two and let it get out of her system....take the test....and then go back on it. Lyrica and kratom will for sure cover the discomfort too.

Hey @Scipio welcome to the forums. I will take @Nurse Ratched 's cue here. We don't answer drug testing questions for the stated reasons. What I will tell you is that Tapentadol (Nucynta) is not commonly tested for, either for the prison system or for employment purposes. That would be the very best anyone could tell you. Tapentadol is a relative of Tramadol (Ultam) an Opioid with a longer history of use and abuse in Western Culture, but also, that is typically prescribed only rarely these days due to popularity of less-potentially-dangerous options.

I did a little digging on the topic and only really found information regarding testing blood levels for folks known to be on Tapentadol for research purposes. I can't find much information at all regarding testing, so, it's possible.

The hard truth is that you will need to either cut the Tapentadol out of the picture, which I know to be highly unlikely or take the chance. If you want my shot from the hip, it will not be tested for. These are all guesses and opinions. I'm happy to throw a new user a proverbial bone, but in return, just be diligent about posting new threads within guidelines and good luck. It's impossible to get pain medication in this world right now, so you like many otheres are between a rock and a hard place. I respect the position you're in and wish I could do more to allay your fears.
