Maybe I'm missing something but how does one institute tarriffs on intelectual property?

I don't watch many films but even I'm aware that Hollywood in the USA is the site of the largest concentration of film production on the planet. The fact some Hollywood movies are partly or wholely filmed in other nations poses an interesting conunderum. Because if a script calls for scenes in Paris, I presume the film-maker looked at the options and realized filming in France would be the cheapest option.

It's true that less people are now going to see a movies but it strikes me that the various streaming services are the competition, not the laughably small foreign film insustries who produce films likely to ever to see a US release.

But on a purely practical note, I'm not a technical genius but even I've worked out that region control on DVDs is easily defeated so I can buy films at quite spectacularly low prices as long as I am prepared to with for 12 months until a DVD is issued.

BTW I just heard that the OFFICIAL reason films produced outside the US are subject to such ridiculous tarriffs is because they represent 'a security threat'. Now it DOES stike me that film-makers in other nations are much more able to criticize the current US government since unlike films produced in the US, the makers can't be deported. But I'm uncertain that so much forethought is a strength of said government.

Every single movie filmed in Hollywood is chock full of propaganda of some sort. That's a broad generalization, but as I've paid for more attention every movie or tv show I see I notice something theyre trying to get you to think. Or all the military porn to get recruits. So this decision almost makes sense. But how many fucking movies are people watching from other countries?

Donald Trump is a retard. My running theory is the collapse of America is the point. Oligarchs will buy up any nationalized industries for pennies, and there's been evidence Trump is a Russian asset since the 80s. If he's not then he just has a hard on for how Oligarchs run shit in Russia. Neither brings me any relief. We'll see the end of the American Empire as we know it in our lifetimes. We have two right wing parties and the democrats are clearly complicit. Second Thought has a great video on the Ratchet Theory on youtube. I advise everyone who isn't a felon to be proficient with a firearm and know gun safety, and to keep an extra for that special felon in your life, because we want to be safe too but I prefer not keeping a 3+ yr sentence on me until shit is really going down

I think that is why European films often never see a US release. Because they frequently have characters who are not clearly defined as being entirely good or evil. That morality is a sliding scale.

I don't say that aren't many, many US citizens who do enjoy such works, but I suggest that European films aren't passive entertainment. They require the viewer to consider what they are shown. But to be fair, I really enjoyed the Spalding Gray film 'Swimming to Cambodia' but I accept that it's likely to be very niche. But it's not like independent US film-makers aren't able to develop great movies because clearly they can. Along with 'Jeffery Bernard is Unwell' and 'Drowning by Numbers', 'Swimming to Camboida' represents the three films I go to if I want to amaze friends.

Talking of Donald Trump, apparently insiders noted that the day before Donald Trump announced he would reopen Alcatraz, he had watched the film 'The Rock'.

I have no idea if the story is true, but it would be fascinating to know if decisions are being made purely on the basis of fictional films...

Apparently Donald Trump has claimed his favourite film is Citizen Kane.

You couldn't make it up...

I mean, I think HE is making it up or one of his PR team has a dry sense of humour but I think we need a journalist to ask 'Which of the two alien ninja shootouts do you prefer?'

Sorta like when he said he reads the Bible all the time. When asked his favorite verse, he said he didn't want to single one out. Then when asked if he prefers Old Testament or New Testament, he said they were both equally good.
