Alcohol Does the heavy consumption of alcohol cause some mental illnesses?

Well, I've heard this somewhere, but is this just a myth, or is it actually true? All of that alcohol that's killing somebody's brain cells may possible lead to them developing some mental illnesses.

I was a very hardcore alcohol for three years. I drank all day every day, up to 6 bottles of wine a day.
I'm almost 7 months sober now and, looking back, in the end I was delusional and - while I had (and still have) mental illness prior to the alcoholism - I was definitely heading into psychosis.

"Substance Induced Psychosis" is a syndrome that consists of any or all of the following: hallucinations (of any of the senses), delusions, unusual or bizarre thinking. It tends to happen quite commonly in the chronic (long-term) use of any drug.

alcohol isn't likely to cause mental illness but if it runs in your family it can cause your mental illnesses to increase in intensity

Anxiety disorders are common.

But does alcoholism cause anxiety disorders or do anxiety disorders cause alcoholism?
It was definitely the other way around for me. I suffered severe and completely crippling anxiety. I live in the UK where benzo's are very rarely prescribed. I got very depressed about the severity of the anxiety leaving me not only unable to work, but also completely isolated socially. After being told to "have a few drinks" by pretty much everyone (parents, brother, other family members, on line friends etc) so I did. I found that alcohol was a miracle cure for my anxiety.

I won't go into any more of it...I'm sure it's not that hard to fill in the blanks yourself...but for me, it was the anxiety disorder that caused the alcohol dependence.

Yes both. In that article I posted, it states that not only does alcohol cause many psych issues but many people drink to relieve a lot of mental health issues. It is very common for comorbidity (for them to exist together) of alcoholism and psychiatric or mental health issues to exist. That's why you have so many dual diagnosis patients!

I have seen alcohol turn my auntie into a vegetable . She used to work as a fashion designer for big budget films. She drank at least a 26er a day since she was 16 . Couple years ago my Mom went over to see her after she called and said she collapsed. Her eyes were yellow and she was taken to the hospital. She suffers from permanent brain damage to this day and has little/no memory . Scary shit man

Wet brain is more like brain damage caused by alcohol than a mental illness, but in my understanding it can cause the symptoms of mental illness but they usually go away when you stop for a period of time. Alcohol won't "cause schizophrenia" or anything like that though....Certain stimulants and psychedelics can actually make you truly "crazy", at least that's my opinion from what I've seen and experienced, but it takes years of chronic use...
