...not really....

there are many people who are considered upstanding citizens and all around good, healthy, trustworthy people, who maintain an opiate addiction almost there entire lives. that picture you showed probably looks nasty because that face is not only sixty-something, but it has also had to endure a very stressfull life of touring, drug use(drugs of ALL kind) etc, etc etc.....

opiates themselves do not cause damage to a persons body, especially not in the way that was depicted in the picture you posted. well, to be completely fair, they do cause changes in the way a persons brain works as far as the release of endorphins and the amount of receptors etc etc inside a persons brain, but that really only becomes a problem if a person runs out of opiates.
The OP is discussing a situation where a person has access to opiates(heroin) there entire life, guaranteed. So in that scenario, no, opiates do not cause harm to ones body.

Also, the typical skinny, unhealthy, junky look that one typically thinks of when thinking of a heroin user is a result of propoganda that has been spread throughout most communities. It is true, that when a person WITHOUT an unlimited supply to heroin becomes an addict, that they may neglect to use proper hygeine, neglect to "take care of themself", and just in general, they neglect to keep themself healthy(by not eating or sleeping, etc...)......it is possible, that a person in this situation may end up looking ravaged and old and leathery like your picture depicted. But that is an indirect result of the said persons heroin use....not a direct result. Its more a result of the lack of funds to buy the drugs than it is the drug use itself. Because if that person(or any person in that scenario) had unlimited access to heroin, then they wouldnt need to spend ANY time trying to make the money to find the drugs, and then find the drugs, and then use the drugs....or mainly, they wouldnt have to go through(or be afraid of) withdrawal, which is the driving force that keeps junkies everywhere on the streets, robbing, stealing, doing anything but take care of themself, to get a fix. And that, is what results in the decline of a persons health so much that they end up looking disgusting......it's the life of a junky, not the heroin itself.
If someone had an endless supply of heroin, they would probably be changed personality-wise greatly, and they would obviously have a huge tolerance, but as long as they maintained there health throughout there heroin use, and used proper technique when IV'ing(if they choose to), then it is possible to be a normal person, living a normal life, as healthy as anyone else.
But like I said, it is possible for indirect causes to result in decreased health...such as everything to do with the life of a junky(no hygeine)...or in this scenario, it could possibly be the wrongfull use of intravenous supplies that could result in a serious medical problem. So i would say as long as you dont use the heroin intraveinously, you are much less likely for any harm to come to you, through the means of heroin use.

If money wasn't the problem... then the impact on friends and family would still be a big issue. I'd say most of them wouldn't be OK with me being pinned 24/7.

Not that I'm sure it would stop me...

yea, it could/probably would have a major impact on your personal life, but it wouldnt cause you to look like a burned out rock star from the 60's.

opiates dont directly cause bodily damage(other then the change in endorphins like I discussed earlier)
