Just the other day after I'd left work, I was walking to the bus stop, whistling a tune to myself as I often do, and a thought occurred to me: I rarely hear anyone else whistle, ever. It struck me as odd, since I'd always considered it to be a pretty common skill - and one that I imagined everyone would want to develop, at least to the point where they could entertain themselves. But of course, if that were the case, wouldn't it be a much more frequent occurrence to hear it? I'm interested to get some idea of how common it really is.
I'll answer my own questions here as well, to contribute:
Can you whistle? If so, musically, or loudly, or both?
I can't quite get the loud-whistle (the kind where you use your fingers), but I can manage about two octaves of the musical kind.
Do you? Often?
I live a very musical life, for someone who hasn't made a career of music. The moment the headphones come off, the whistling starts. I do my best not to do it in the office at work, but once I'm outside, I just start.
How frequently do you hear others whistling?
Rarely; see above.
