I take Sertraline, Abilify and Clonazapam for depression, anxiety and ocd. Presently, I'm dealing with a major problem with caffeine consumption that's starting to ruin my life. I know that sounds strange, but it's true. I drink 6-8 20-ounce Diet Dr. Peppers a day, every day. I don't like how it makes me feel, but I can't stop drinking it; I'm obsessed with it and think about it all the time. I have heard that caffeine interferes with antidepressants - not just because it makes you jittery, but that it really interferes with the absorption process and makes your medication ineffective or less effective. I feel gross, physically and mentally. I have a therapist and she is working with me to get off the soda, but it's not working currently. I used to be slender and attractive, now I sort of look like I'm pregnant (I'm not.). I feel sick during the work day and I'm losing my productivity (I'm in sales.). I don't feel like eating when I drink a lot of soda. Does anyone have any advice or comments? I would appreciate them!!!

It's the citric acid in sodas that conflict with medications, but you should be fine if you spread them apart (don't drink a soda within an hour of taking your meds).

If you can't give up the sodas then do this, drink a glass of water with every 8oz of soda you consume. Also, make sure and eat foods that are natural vasodilators (spinach, lettuce, beets, etc). this will open up your blood vessels so your heart doesn't have to work as hard to pump blood (hence the jittery feeling). you probably experience cold hands and feet too (the vasodilators will help with that). If all else fails, ask if your pdoc will prescribe a beta-blocker called propranolol which is used for people with high blood pressure and social anxiety/stage fright.

Didn't you post another thread about this?

I have a similar problem with drinking excessive amounts of coffee and inability to cut down.

I'm obsessed with NOT being tired is the only way I can put it and I'm constantly drinking more to try to make sure that the only time I get tired is before bed, which of course as you could imagine backfires sometimes when I'm not tired at night and need sleeping pills.

It's been a serious problems of mine for over 10 years now and has conflicted with medications like Klonopin in the past.

I also have depression, anxiety and OCD so I know it is connected to those things and nothing anyone is suggested has ever helped.

If anyone has any suggestions let me know.

is it common for people with ocd to drink so much coffee?

i know someone who drinks alot of coffee who has ocd then continues their nightly fixation of obsessing over the oven, checking locks etc compulsive behaviours. they also drink coffee right before they go to bed which doesnt make any sense to me? its like having a beer as soon as you wake up.
