The only reason I havn't picked a major is because I don't know if it will make me money in the future. I love history but want to have good money. So basically if I major in history will is there a good chance I will make alot of money? And also I don't mind doing a few extra years for a better degree past a bachelor's if that helps.

I think most history majors end up becoming professors...I would think you would get paid enough being a professor and you get summers off!

Not that i get the whole majoring thing, but i study Ancient History at uni in the UK. I really enjoy it, i don't study it for any particular financial gain (but that would be nice), i can only say its worth studying if you enjoy the topic. I enjoying learning for the sake of knowledge but that's just me. The lifestyle i do enjoy even though i still live with my parents for money's sake.

you should pick a major that you are interested in and not out of the motivation of money. if you like what you do, life is much better. and just because your major is history, doesn't mean that you have to get a job related to history. my uncle is a history major, but is a banker for Comerica and makes good money.

If you're in the US, I assume you could go to grad school after your degree, and be a lawyer or whatever?

Otherwise, your degree will probably have little effect on what you end up doing. Just having a BA in History won't get you much. You could end up doing anything, but that's really down to what you do once you're in the workforce.

btw, I'm not sure professors really get paid very much at all, nor that they get summers off....(where I am, if they're not teaching summer courses, thy are preparing for their regular courses).

Basically though, I'd think of something you might like to do, and work backwards from that to find out what you need to study to accomplish it.

You should try and steer clear of choosing a major based on how much money it will bring you, and more-so on what you will enjoy doing every day. I know that's idealistic, but there are definitely professions for those who major in history.

You could (and might do well to) get your PhD and become a college professor, often history majors find work as curators and cultural analysts for museums and cultural institutions, or if you're interested in media at all, lots of history majors go into documentary film and television production. There is money to be made in being consultants or experts on film and television projects.

Ideally you'll find a profession that you enjoy and that you can live comfortable with, but that all really depends on how much you're willing to put into it. Good luck!

as long as you have a degree, most employers won't entirely care what it's in.

for an encouraging example: my father got a degree in forest management (basically, how to be a good park ranger), and now he is a corrosion engineer.
the only downfall of not having a degree in engineering was that he couldn't get promoted to a higher position, though he is already manager of his own branch.

so study what you're interested in, or you'll regret it later!
