Dad sells son's 90-dollar video game online for more than 9000

Sun Dec 16, 1:37 AM ET

MONTREAL (AFP) - After catching his 15-year-old smoking pot, a father sold the hard-to-get "Guitar Hero III" video game he bought his son for 90 dollars for Christmas at an online auction, fetching 9,000 dollars.

The sale took place after the father spent two weeks searching for the video game for the Nintendo Wii gameboard.

"So I was so relieved in that I had finally got the Holy Grail of Christmas presents pretty much just in the nick of time. I couldn't wait to spread the jubilance to my son," the father wrote on the eBay website.

"Then, yesterday, I came home from work early and what do I find? My innocent little boy smoking pot in the back yard with two of his delinquent friends."

The man, a school teacher, who kept his identity private, said he sold the coveted video game to punish his son and discourage him from smoking dope.

The sale was a boon for the family's bank account, since the game the father purchased for 90 dollars (US) was finally sold to an Australian who plunked down 9,100 dollars for it.

The naughty son, however, will not go without a present on Christmas.

"I am still considering getting him a game for his Nintendo. Maybe something like Barbie as the Island Princess or Dancing with the Stars ... I know he will just love them," the father said, tongue-in-cheek.

I wonder when he actually sold this on ebay. No guitar hero 3 is going for over a few hundred anymore.

"sells hard to get christmas present on Ebay for $9000"

did anyone else think of crack when they read that? :)

I followed this when it was happening, the auction finished about a week ago or so I believe. I HIGHLY doubt that the high bid actually paid, though. The whole thing turned into a bid frenzy when people began overreacting to the guys' (admittedly well written) story of what his son did and why he was selling it/punishing him.

The seller even said straight up that he DID NOT expect the high bidder to pay. I know people can be stupid but I still really doubt that some asshole in australia came through with $9k for some bullshit.

So it all comes down to Mary Jane saving the day again.

But yeah.. whoever "bid" $9k was obviously a fellow stoner.. messin with the commie teacher.

Shit, I'll sell my copy of guitar hero III for $9K, any takers? as much as I love it I think I can manage to part with it.

This is what I thought. Let's see if he's laughing about it when the money doesn't come through.

However we don't know if Guitar Heroes III is just a code name, and really the video game was a collectors item. Though I can't see there being any games "rare" enough for a Nintendo Wii fetching anything over a couple of hundred.

There have been "rare" games I've gone after in the past (Perfect Dark when it came out, a football game that was popular here, Australia, that is), but what happens is that the shop orders more copies in.

Does Australia not have Guitar Hero 3 or something? Why would an ozzie pay such a ridiculous price (if he wasnt jus messin with the dude, like I said before) and I dont think theres really any "Rare" versions of GHIII

Is that a pun or did not many copies of Perfect Dark make their way to Australia?

Pun? Where?

I used Perfect Dark as an example, though, if that's what you meant. It was one of those hyped up games that people pre-ordered in fear of missing out on the first release.

And I think someone asked whether we have Guitar Hero III here. I don't know, as I don't tend to purchase video games any more, however we had the other two, and I can't imagine it would be hard at all to go on an online store and buy the game officially.

It has just been apparently sold out everywhere or something.
Though that 9000 price is still completely outrageous and i really dont believe it will be paid. What a fucking loser if he actually would go through with it. Why doesnt he buy the fucking best guitar and amp you could get and still have thousands of dollars for druugs. :)

if i would have a son and would caught him playing fucking guitar hero i would sell his videogame too and buy him pot and a real guitar instead
then he would learn
