tried to order some industrial-grade GBL from Sigma online a couple days back - for use as an intermediate in the synthesis of polyvinnylic compounds and as a solvent for cleaning me sensitive electronic bits, got an email back saying "unable to sell - controlled substance"

BTW, i'm very interested in whether anyone has any details on who will ship 1,4B or GBL (for cleaning inkjet printers, of course!) to Australia and whether, infact, you've been fortunate enough to receive the shipment.
If you have info, maybe you can reply via email so as not to frustrate the mods?
Thanks in advance, all.

GBL, like GHB, is scheduled.
There are a few places to buy it online, but you must have a letter from customs and from some government department (i think it might be the health department??)
So, unless you REALLY have a good reason to legally import it then you'll have to find it else where

Though, i did find a place in russia that sold it by the 44 gallon drum, and i dont think they would care if you had a letter or not. kinda hard to bring that in as hand luggage tho

Are you sure about GBL being scheduled? About a year ago I got pinged by customs for bringing over some scheduled herbs/herbal high stuff and the only thing they sent through to my address was furanone/gbl containing product, everything else was destroyed. I have been bringing GBL into the
country for over 2 years, even as revivarant, renutrient, and blue nitro which clearly stated its ingredients, and never had any trouble. I recently imported a litre of pure GBL which had been checked. Also, if you are bringing over 99.9% pure GBL as a cleaning product, ahem, not for human consumption I don't think the health dep. or TGA can do anything. I have always been under the impression that GBL was untouched in OZ?????

GBL is just as illegal as GHB.

Preamble
The information set forth in the Schedule below is the outcome of the consideration by the National Drugs and Poisons Schedule Committee at its meeting on 19-21 November 1996 of the scheduling proposals notified in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette of 9 October 1996 (Part A) as well as other scheduling proposals (Part B and Part C).

c) 4-HYDROXYBUTANOIC ACID - Schedule 9 classification
Outcome
Schedule 9 - Amendment

4-HYDROXYBUTANOIC ACID - amend entry to read:
4-HYDROXYBUTANOIC ACID and its salts.
The above amendment clarifies that it is not the intent of the Committee to include all derivatives of 4-hydroxybutanoic acid under the Schedule 9 entry. Derivatives are to be considered separately, and the following derivative was given a specific Schedule entry:
Schedule 9 - New entry
GAMMA BUTYROLACTONE.

Shit! Thanks BigTrancer... Wonder how come they let all this stuff through even after opening the packages? I actually spoke to a Perth customs officer about these tabs that had GBL (labelled as 4-furanone di-hydro or whatever)in them and he had no problems sending them through to me. He was more worried about ephedrine, of all things.
