First of all I would like to state that my dosage was consumed over the course of three nights, I did NOT take three boxes of Coricidin in one go. I realize now that it wasn't a very smart idea and I am a very lucky person for lasting through the horrible experience.
This took place recently about a couple of months ago. I am an avid DXM user; I prefer Wal-Tussin or Robitussin brand DXM cough gels at 15mg a pill for a bottle of 20. I have been using DXM since January of 2014; never once had a product with another active ingredient. These particular three nights, the DXM-only cough gels had been removed from the shelves (assuming CVS had caught onto everyone taking/buying so much of the product) and I had noticed there was a full stock of Coricidin.
Yes, I have done my research on Coricidin and have read plenty of reports on people having fatal experiences and/or bad trips in general. Being the DXM user I was, I figured if I didn't exceed one box then I would be fine.
The first two nights were amazing. I had a very intense trip, better than any trip with a DXM-only product, and had even introduced a few friends to the drug. Things took a rapid turn during my third consecutive night dosing.
1 hour after dosing; It started off as an intense buzz, creeping slowly up the back of my head; it took a bit longer to kick in than the first two nights, but I thought nothing of it. Thirty more minutes passed without any adverse effects. My friends and I had turned on some dubstep and the mouth numbness began to kick in (this is how I know my trip is beginning.) I was having a really good time.
2 hours after dosing; Things took a turn for the worst. I began to get really hot and started sweating, and I kept making my friends feel my forehead because I knew I was burning up. I sat in front of my fan for a good hour but this did not combat my temperature. I freaked out and tried to find a thermometer without luck; I was feeling too bad to even move. I stayed in my bedroom with the fan blaring on me and the lights off, thinking I just needed to lie down and relax. I was wrong. My chest began to feel like there was a weight sitting on it, and breathing began to get difficult. Every time I breathed in I felt sooo much pressure on my chest. Somehow I just KNEW I was going to die, and I told my friend over and over that I loved her, and to have her phone ready to call an ambulance when it was needed. This "hot flash" lasted for another hour until finally I forced myself to take a cold shower and I felt entirely better. At this point, my trip was crazy. I couldn't listen to rock music simply because it "didn't sound right." I didn't like the sound at all! Dubstep was the only option.
To make a long story short, I forced myself to sleep around 3:30 AM; we had dosed at 9:45pm. I was entirely grateful that I woke up the next morning (pupils dilated and completely "off," though) and from that day forward I decided to never touch, even look at Coricidin again. It took me a day to fully come down. The only reason I had gotten these horrendous pills was because I live in a close walking distance to only one pharmacy and didn't have many other options.
I'm hoping someone who is interested in taking Coricidin will read this and realize they may not be as lucky as I was. I will say though, they are a decent booster, but PLEASE do not take more than 6 pills if you want to be relatively safe. Not saying there is no adverse effects to this, but 6 pills is reaching the daily limit of CPM (chlorpheniramine maleate) and no more.
Funny enough, I am typing this to pass time while my 20 Robo-gels kick in... please share similar experiences or commentary in the comments.
Be safe when it comes to DXM guys, and happy tripping!
