This took place 4 years ago. For those who dont know, Outward Bound is a course you can take. It is a very hard adventure, almost like being in the army or something because of the hard work. This trip was to Minnesota, a 15 day canoeing trip that involved 130 miles of travelling among the many many lakes. We would canoe on one lake, then carry the canoes and back packs through trails in the woods that would lead to other lakes. This was very hard work. I was sort of sent here as a punishment for being caught with weed (my mom). Some of this stuff is taken from a journal i wrote in while on the trip.To the story...
Day 8 of this canoeing. I am very tired and sore. Some people couldn't take the constant carrying and said fuck it I am not carrying anymore. That left more work for us who were struggling to keep up. It rained hard, we were in the middle of Ima Lake when the real rain hit. Canoes had at least an inch of water in them. I am resting at camp now. We got up at 5am and canoed almost constantly till 7pm when we found this camp.
Day 9. Something awesome happened today. I cut my leg open bad when i fell on a rock. My knee was pouring blood, soaking my sock red. I went to the first aid pack for the first time. I got some bandages and noticed a bottle of "tylenol #3, 1-2 for moderate to severe pain". I grabbed it and stuffed it in my underwear. 30 pills. I took 4 at once. We were resting at a campsite, it was around 2pm i think. They took our watches yesterday, saying it is a distraction.
It kicked in about a half hour later. It felt so good, I became completely at peace. It started raining hard again as we were at a 150 rod portage, carrying our supplies and canoes. I had the 90 pound canoe on my back, i felt the strain on my body but i smiled and kept on marching.
Day 14. I popped 5 of them before the big event. We have to canoe with 3 ppl 6 miles, carry the canoe a mile, then run 6 miles. It is an endurance contest. I was pumped up, felt great. Without the codeine i bet i would have felt tired. Canoed 6 miles, carried canoe. Then the jog. It was beautiful, in the middle of the woods. I had the codeine with me and gave 3 to someone I knew that was having knee trouble. He smiled and thanked me. On I went, made it to the place. My time was 3hrs 30 minutes. Not the top score but beat about 80% of the tired crouds. About 200 ppl were in the race.
It was a very strenuous adventure, but the codeine helped out.
I never got caught with them. At the end the camp leader said jokingly, empty your pockets! who took the codeine? but he figured he just never put it in the first aid thing.
