Cocaine teens fuel big rise in Valium abuse

Valium, the sleeping pill that gained notoriety 40 years ago as 'mother's little helper', is damaging a fresh generation of women who use it to relax and go to sleep after taking cocaine or amphetamines.
Doctors warned this weekend that they are seeing a huge increase among teenagers and women in their twenties who are unaware that the little blue pills are potentially fatal when taken with alcohol, as well as being highly addictive. Patients who try to come off the tablets suffer withdrawal effects for weeks, including hallucinations and anxiety attacks, which can be worse than the symptoms that accompany withdrawal from cocaine or ecstasy.

Valium, widely prescribed in the Sixties to women with anxiety or depression, is the brand name for diazepam, one of a class of tranquillisers and sleeping pills known as benzodiazepines. The pills have gained new popularity as they can be bought cheaply over the internet.

According to Dr Mike McPhillips, who runs the addiction centre at the Priory Hospital in Roehampton, west London, several patients bought them while travelling around south-east Asia on a gap year. 'We are seeing a lot of young women coming in with a Valium addiction, up to one in 10 patients,' he said. 'There's a culture of younger and younger women taking cocaine and if you take half a gram it is hard to sleep, so the dealer who generously sold you that drug will sell you the Valium.'

I think they mean "comedown". ;)

I was unaware that, before, only "older" women use cocaine :)

hey, how come my coke dealer never offers me valiums? girls get all the breaks.

yeah its unfair why is it always the girls that get free rohypnol and gbl with their drinks!

benzos & c is a good combo. no anxiety. no teeth grinding. smooth and euphoric. brits are kind of late in discovering that.. :)

i wish i had some valium for some of my c comedowns ... especially those times that u can tell it is cut wit amp or meth and you cant sleep for hours afta usin

Someone is gonna get accidentaly addicted to Valium because they take it to calm cokeovers?

What world was this written for? Also, if they're going to go that crazy they should mention that the withdrawl from benzos can be lethile!

If they do coke a lot and always follow it down with some valium or other benzo, I could see someone getting addicted over time. Everyones body chemisty is different, some people can become physically addicted to benzos quicker than others.

I'm not saying it would be easy to get hooked that way, but you never know. If you were doing coke that much, you could end up being addicted to both and if you stop both drugs could assume that the WD symptoms are all from the coke, when in reality they're the result of a poly-drug addiction.

what's the big deal about getting addicted to benzos so long as you're in full supply? being addicted to c is something else i suppose?

Longterm use, or even semi-short term use of benzos, mostly xanax, tends to exacerbate the initial anxiety symptoms in people afterwards and is sometimes associated with depression. This, of course, is when you come off them. The longer you do them without breaks, the worse it is for you on that dreaded day where you dont have it. Do you think you can take them every day until the day you die? :\

if tapering is done slowly i'll be ok.. slower the better.. check out www.benzo.org.uk for detail info about benzo withdrawal

If you're just using them to comedown off uppers on weekends you're not really putting yourself at risk very much nor are you risking addiction.

You'll probably do yourself more good by getting some sleep, so long as you take moderate doses and don't go insane on the booze with them after speeding/being coked up.

BOLLOCKS TO THAT!

Im on 1 mg of Clonazepam and 30 mg of Temazepam at night and honestly i wish i could take them till the day i die. Im honestly afraid of the die they take my temazepam away cause im such an insomniac. As weird as it sounds id give the klonopin up in a heart beat to keep the temazepam even though must people will say klonopin is alot stronger.

This story did make me laugh though because when i used to do coke my connection always had Klonopin, Xanax, or Valium up for sale too so you could get a good nights rest but i never grabbed any. I didn't start benzo's really till i got a prescription. Getting 30 1mg Klonopins and 30 30mg Temazepams for $6 is much more effecient anyways =D
