Cocaine already off Conn. shelves
Legal Newsline
April 24, 2007

Less than a week after he called for it, Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal announced Monday that the energy drink Cocaine has been embargoed.

Blumenthal claims that Redux Beverages' marketing is "reprehensible" and an insult to anyone trying to deter drug use.

According to a report in the Hartford Courant, officials from the state's Department of Consumer Protection stopped warehouses from distributing 7,200 cans of Cocaine on Monday.

"We welcome this embargo, immediately stopping sales of this unlicensed Cocaine energy drink," Blumenthal said. "My office will continue the fight to ensure that this product is permanently banned from store shelves because it dangerously and irresponsibly glamorizes illicit drug use, especially for children."

Blumenthal added that he will take aggressive legal action if Redux Beverages doesn't comply with the embargo.

Also, he says the company may have violated federal and state regulations.

"This united front in fighting Cocaine -- mobilizing state, federal and local agencies -- should send a message to Cocaine manufacturers: this so-called legal alternative is unlawful and unwelcome on our store shelves," Blumenthal said.

According to the report, Commissioner Jerry Farrell Jr. of the Department of Consumer Protection said the drink was not targeted because of its name, but because the company does not have a license.

fucking ridiculous I fail to see the problem, its an energy drink, it doesn't contain any cocaine and that guy looks ratrher constipated.

also how is it encouraging drug use, shit I didn't even know that there was an energy drink called cocaine but I can't even recall the number of times I've put that shit up me nose.

"the drink was not targeted because of its name, but because the company does not have a license."

Yes, that makes complete sense.

God forbid a beer is made called "Heroin", that would surpass all present forms of glamorizing drugs to children. "Cocaine" for a energy drink name is clever! It's not some children luring, drug conspiracy. This just motivates me to try it next time I see it.

I know marketing to druggies by naming products after drugs tatally works doesn't it infact I'm going to ride an extra mile on friday to go to the only store in my area that carries it(god I'm pathetic)

So are cans of Coca-Cola going to be pulled for having 'Enjoy Coke' plastered on the side? ;)

Don't give them any ideas!8o

The funny part is that now that the man doesn't want them to have it, it could just be bottled horse piss with caffeine and kids would still pay $3-4 a can to chug it down.

Come to think of it... their new slogan to replace the one that offended conservatives so much could be "Cocaine: The only energy drink straight from a mule's body cavity to your mouth"

I haven't been able to try this stuff yet, this stupid political cloud surrounding this drink just makes me want to try it even more. Sadly I haven't found any stores that have it. I hear its quite powerful though...

A little beverage company (such as this) could never afford the kind of publicity they are getting for free. Everytime someone makes some statement, their sales go up.

'Cocaine' beverage slammed, but sales on the rise

Redux Beverages' 'Cocaine' energy drink has been causing ructions in the US as council members in New York have called the product to be banned because of its controversial name and high caffeine content.

The product appears to be benefiting from all the free publicity, despite its negative nature, and sales have reportedly gone up.

A number of councilors have called for a boycott of Cocaine, which contains three times more caffeine per ounce than leading energy drink Red Bull, claiming the makers of the drink are either ignorant to the dangers of the illegal drug which carries the same name, or only interested in making money.

The product, which is currently available in New York and California, has received a frosty reception in Chicago, where it has yet to go on sale. Some bars and clubs have said they will not stock the beverage if approached. But sales will not be hampered, as consumers may soon be able to purchase the energy drink online if the rumors that it is to be sold via Amazon.com come to fruition.

Redux have also been criticized for glorifying the Class A drug and its effects, along with promoting the mixture of its product with alcohol by listing cocktails it can be used to make on its website.

"The product is currently being sold at select stores in Illinois, Michigan, Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio, New York, Northern New Jersey, Los Angeles, San Diego, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Iowa and Connecticut. It has also received inquiries for distribution in Europe." - Wiki

That might explain why some of you can't find it.

Lol, I don't see how the dangers of Cocaine (drug) effects Cocaine (drink), and even if it does, what's it to them? It's a marketing idea that's actually working - let it go.

Exactly- and all this negative press is free advertising. Sales are going up, not _despite_ the bad press, but BECAUSE OF the bad press =D

As I mentioned previously, this was brilliant marketing gimmick, they knew full well that some crazy states would ban the drink and spark a "national debate" over the name of the drink, and thus in return TONS of FREE ADVERTISING by ALL MEDIA OUTLETS , brilliant I tell ya....

;)

Yey for free publicity, you can't buy that kind of advertising coverage =D

I don't know what's stupider - marketing some overpriced "energy drink" by calling it that, or bothering to ban it.
