I am sure there is an answer out there for this but I CANNOT FIND IT.

Every time I search for clonidine and opiates it gives me all of the posts, literature, etc. on clonidine for opiate withdrawal. I already know it helps for opiate withdrawal.

What I need to know is 'does it interfere/enhance opiates when taken with them'? I take clonidine for hypertension and I would like to know if I should avoid taking it while on opiates/oids because of the possibility of clonidine blocking or interfering with the effects of the opiates. I just notice that when I take it with, I get super tired and fall asleep. I am not one of those that enjoys nodding out unless it is time for bed.

I could be wrong about this, but it seems possible that clonidine could enhance at least some of the effects of opioids. I believe one of the reasons a nod feels like it does is because your blood pressure is low; clonidine also lowers blood pressure so there could be some synergism there (potentially leading to heavier sedating/nod effects). Too low a blood pressure can be bad so it may even be a dangerous combination. If you are prescribed the clonidine by a doctor I would seriously consider telling him you are (presumably) using opioids recreationally, and seeing what he says. To be honest, this is a combo I would not take very lightly, it seems like it may be an easy path to an overdose. But I could be wrong.

I recently tried cold turkey withdrawal and realized it was too dangerous. Anyway, my pain doc prescribed clonidine and vicodin to try to help me out for a few days. I am not sure if they interact or anything, but I dont believe they do. Clonidine is just a blood pressure med. It keeps you from having crazy fast heart beats and crazy high BPs during w/d. So it can relax you, and opiates tendto relax you as well, so you're just kind of stacking on...if that makes sense.

Don't abuse clonodine with opiates. Your BP can become dangerously low very easily. It is made to be strong enough to lower your BP when it is jacked up due to withdrawals. So no withdrawals, lowering your BP with that and opioids. I have used it with xanax and I could not stay awake for anything. I just took 2 mg of alprazolam and .1 mg clonodine. 2 mg of xanax jacks me up, everytime.

It will make you nod but not in the sense of an opiate nod where it's all euphoric. And combining opiates with clonodine is not worth it, unless you have a much lower dose than normally keeps you well and you want to feel more normal.

clonidine is used for opiate w/d because it lowers your heart rate.... dont combine any opiate with clonidine

I've considered asking my sub dr for clonidine because I don't like how I feel wired on subs. I would guess the dangers of low BP wouldn't be as pronounced with subs as oppossed to a full agonist.
