Which one works best for sleep, especially long term (weeks/months) ?

I can get either, prescribed.

Let's assume 1 mg clonazepam=20 mg diazepam ?

Duration of sleep, onset ?

always best NOT to resort to benzos for sleep
either one can lead to dependency if you take it for long periods of time which in turn you'll be in worse position than you are right now
plenty of other things to help you sleep
think any benzo can be good for sleep if taken in moderation
don't take to much that you black out for people with zero tolerance can easily black out on those doses
IME valium kicks in faster, last longer and is more sedating but everyone is different

My apologies, I should have been more clear.
The dependency is already there, for years.

A crazy doc thought it to be a good idea to taper clonazepam with lorazepam. It failed. I will be taking a benzo for months, at least.

Klonopin/clonazepam doesn't act that long for sleep, not anymore. Generally 8-9 hours (months ago), 10 hours if I'm lucky.
No experience with diazepam. Someone described it as a good daytime tranq, but not as good for long lasting sleep as clonazepam.

I have both in hand...

I'll say they both work really well for sleep.

But, Diazepam (Valium) has better muscle relaxant properties, and is probably more comfortable to sleep on than Clonazepam (Klonopin)...

But in summary, you can't go wrong with either one...They both last long enough to give you a great sleep.

I'm sure he knows benzo's can cause dependency, that wasn't his question. Valium would be my go, klonopin dosent really make me sleepy, unless ridulous amounts are taken. I find Valium to be the one benzo I don't like to do ANYTHING on except lay around, it just makes me lazy. No benzo's seem to put me to sleep, but Valium for that for sure, it just makes you feel lazy, and it has better muscle relaxing properties too than Klonopin, though I have never really noticed muscle relaxtion from benzo's, but alot of people do and Valium is good at it. Has a longer half life also than klonopin..Seems like if you were getting a benzo for sleep they would offer a hypnotic, such as temazapam which is supposedly good for sleep. But go with the Valium. It kicks in faster, klonopin takes a while to kick in, and you don't want that when trying to go to sleep.

^I second the Diaz especially if you've never had it. Of course there is cross tolerance, but I consistently switch between the two to avoid increasing dosages.

Mirtazapine is also pretty good as an adjunct sleep aid. I defy anyone to stay awake longer than an hour after 30mgs.
