(Clomethiazole / 384 mg) - Placid sedative experience similar to alcohol or barbs

I made the decision to try clomethiazole based on a few scattered reports online of its efficacy as a sedative/hypnotic similar in dose response to barbituates and methaqualone.

I had read that clomethiazole induces histamine release that produces symptoms of rhinitis (sinus irritation/itching), so approximately 20 minutes before taking the clomethiazole I took 20mg of a non-drowsy antihistamine (loratidine) to counter this effect.

With some trepidation, I swallowed two 192 mg capsules of clomethiazole, and waited patiently for the dose to take effect. The first symptom I noticed, after approximately 45 minutes, was a strange peppery sensation in my sinuses. I was prepared for this effect, and its presence reassured me of the authenticity of the pills.

1 hour after taking my dose, I began to feel a pleasant ataxia similar to alcohol intoxication, but without the gastrointestinal distress that so frequently accompanies alcohol consumption. By this time, the strange nasal irritation had mostly subsided, probably due to the antihistamine. I decided to watch a movie, and see where the experience would lead me. It never really took me as high as I wanted to go, and the peak left me with a truncated feeling. I would judge the peak experience to be about equivalent to 4 beers in terms of degree of intoxication, and similar in effect, but with its own unique flavor. The effects were rather brief and subsided in about 2 hours, and left me feeling pleasantly fuzzy-headed.

I value this drug over alcohol and benzodiazepines, due to its absence of negative side effects (aside from the sinus issue, which is minor) over alcohol, and due to its pleasant euphoric effect, which is virtually absent from benzos. Next time I will up the dose to 3-4 caps, since the rather low dose I took left me wanting. This drug definitely has potential.

Cool to see a trip report on this unusual (unusual for the USA anyway) substance. I have experienced several binge episodes of this substance and I would agree in your description of it as "unique". I enjoyed it but would caution against combination with other GABAergics. I combined with clonazepam and experienced an enormous potentiation much greater than what I expected. I was reckless in not reading fully into its mechanism of action and I believe that because it binds at the Barbiturate/Picrotoxin site of the GABA receptor while the clonazepam binds at the BZD site they did not directly compete and as a result I was extremely intoxicated.

On its own however, it does have a unique glow to it that is a refreshing experience.

That's a good point, I was going to drink one beer to potentiate the effects, but decided against it. I forgot to mention that this drug has a fantastic body high that one could easily forget if you are sitting perfectly still, but once you get up, you are hit by the full force of the ataxia. I recently tried 3 more tabs, which seems to be a lot more fun that just two. I felt stumbling drunk, but happier somehow, and none of the pissing/vomiting/headache, etc. fellelx euqvialentof arounf 7 bers. I don't feel a damn thing in my sinuses. The only thing i wou caution on are the dependencg liability, and th distressing tendency to metabolize extended binging into a foul-d,ellinh thiol cimound that causes one to stink.'

But yeah, I too experienced quite a lot of ataxia. Fun, but something to be respected.

I was totally unimpressed, anyone that even remotly compares it to qualudes never did any real ludes. Ok for sleeping aid but worthless for getting a high.

I got hold of a few 100 of the 192mg grey capsules some years ago. We liked to crush them in our mouth and breathe on people. VERY dangerous to mix with alcohol and it's only current use is to get people off alcohol. I've seen people IV them and they described the rush as being like poppers + vodka. Have to be quick because it DISSOLVES PLASTIC. You can imagine what sort of people they were.

If you can manage to crush & swallow - effects come on much faster and much stronger.

Pity it's not more potent (weight for weight) because it's hypnotic effects blow away the strongest benzos. I've also had Seconal and I found it much more enjoyable then Seconal (but I only had a few to play with so I don't know if there are tricks for getting more out of them.

Clomethiazole seems legal worldwide - When I got them, they were OTC in Spain. It's POM in the UK so sadly the usual suppliers would face the Medicines Act, not the MoDA.
