the approach in that bb code was all wrong. i have changed the way it works. now this vb code:

[cite=mahatma gandhi]you must be the change you wish to see in the world.[/cite]

gets you this:

you must be the change you wish to see in the world.

mahatma gandhi

url tags, etc. in the citation will work as normal. i think it looks much better.
