Ok guys I'm new here, so please excuse me if there already is a thread about this.
chocolate contains phenylamine which is psychoactive, but most of it gets digested, so very little gets to the brain, so this reminded me of something i read about ayahuasca, DMT also gets digested in the stomach so in ayahuasca they mix DMT containing plants with MAOI containing plants so the DMT doesn't get digested, so I was wondering if this could work for chocolate, if SWIM could eat something before chocolate (MAOI or some other compunds) that would prevent the phenylamine digestion and produce a phenylamine high? am I on to something or am I just stupid?

We don't SWIM here.

Phenethylamine, unlike DMT, does not produce central stimulant effects. If you ate chocolate with a MAOI you would probably just get very sick.

Damn, Sekio, I'm glad you mentioned it.

Thanks for the warning. You just did a harm reduction.

Apparently phenylethylamine is found it chocolate but the rapid metabolism by MAO-B stops most of it from reaching the brain. So theoretically you could take a MAO-I to prevent this from happening. Personally I doubt you would get "high" off it though. And you could also increase your brain levels of phenylethylamine by taking phenylalanine, or tyrosine, neither of which create a "high".

A study of phenylethylamine levels in the brain of a rat found that MAO inhibition caused a 40-fold increase in brain phenylethylamine.

In another study, when phenylethylamine (PEA) was administered to depressed patients together with selegiline, a MAO-B inhibitor added to prevent destruction of PEA, the depression was relieved in 60% of cases, leading to the suggestion that a deficit of PEA may be a cause of depression.

It's unclear to me whether you would get all that much more of an effect from taking a MAO-I with chocolate than you would from taking a MAO-I on it's own. Either way, I doubt it would get you high, I think it's just going to have subtle anti-depressant effects.

See: http://www.chm.bris.ac.uk/motm/pea/peav.htm

However, there are people on other forums (especially the Social Anxiety Support forum) who claim that it does create a "high" to combine phenylethylamine supplements with a MAO-B inhibitor. There are even people saying they got addicted to it. But really a person can get addicted to anything, that doesn't mean it gets you "high". I'm not sure what to make of it.

I would highly suggest doing some more research on the potential dangers before trying this combo. Chocolate with an MAO-I I could potentially cause a tyramine reaction, and taking straight PEA from a supplement as opposed to a food source could be dangerous. It also affects different people differently and could adversely affect your heart.

EDIT: After reading some more about taking PEA supplements with seligiline (etc) I really don't think it's worth the risks. It sounds like it causes very unpleasant effects and is very dangerous.
