Chloral Hydrate? Any opinions?

Strips your stomach lining like nothing else (next closest, naproxen). Take lanzoprazole or similar beforehand.
This is what used to be in a 'Micky Finn' - like a roofie, but with a horrible taste (I can only think some spirits, years ago, must have tasted hideous).
Dose: 250-400mg, but like everything, test with a 1% dose, in case you have any untoward reaction. One of those drugs it's not too clever an idea to drink alcohol, on top of (vomit aspiration, while unconcious, is something of a theme with the two together), just like those other aged sedatives, barbiturates.

Severe insomnia (short-term use), using chloral hydrate 143.3 mg/5 mL oral solution [when insomnia is interfering with daily life and other therapies have failed] for chloral hydrate

By mouth using oral solution

Adult 430–860 mg once daily (max. per dose 2 g) for a maximum of 2 weeks, dose to be taken with water or milk at bedtime

Severe insomnia (short-term use), using cloral betaine 707 mg (≡ 414 mg chloral hydrate) tablets [when insomnia is interfering with daily life and other therapies have failed] for chloral hydrate

By mouth using tablets

Adult 1–2 tablets once daily for a maximum of 2 weeks, dose to be taken with water or milk at bedtime, repeat courses are not recommended and can only be administered after reassessment by a specialist, alternatively 414–828 mg once daily for a maximum of 2 weeks, dose to be taken with water or milk at bedtime, repeat courses are not recommended and can only be administered after reassessment by a specialist; maximum 4 tablets per day; maximum 2 g per day.

Short term only, no more than once a week.
Gastrointestinal side effects can be pretty bad, take with food if you decide on it.
Hangover is non existent. You wake up feeling refreshed which is a surprise.
Effects from 1g are quite rapid, you smell/taste fruity pears (trichloroethanol evaporating from the lungs) then fall asleep.
It isn't recreational, but if you need sleep it's extremely useful. A tool, not a recreational drug.
Safety is relatively sketchy but good enough for it to be used in pediatric medicine.

alphachloralose - am I right in guessing that it lacks the objectional taste as NO animal would touch chloral hydrate. It tastes like poison!

I note that their have been cases of fatal intoxication in man, but thoset appear to be a suicides. Very sad.

No idea, never tasted it.

This stuff:

Probably not as lethal in humans as mice have a fast, high temperature metabolism so sedatives like this seem to be particularly effective.

The difficulty is finding the sweet spot...
