this wonderfully nasty substance, invented in 1939 is a GABA agonist, fairly similar to barbiturates like secobarbital in its pharmacological profile.
it's the drug of choice for alcohol detox where i'm from (although the first clinic gave me the option of diazepam and clonazepam instead).
i said fuck it, this is not something you get everyday, so here a quick rundown of my experience with it:
the first side effect you notice is a burning in your nostrils frighteningly similar to all those chems that are so very unpleasant insufflated (EPH, 2c-x, 4-fa etc.). they come in one strength only (192mg), blue, translucent egg-shaped jelly caps (similar to certain brands of temazepam. unlike benzos it's very sedating and only mildly anxiolytic, but me being me saved up six of the pills and that was really quite fun. i cannot compare it to any other tranq/sedative (because i missed out on meprobamate, the whole qualones and barbiturates.).
it's good for its intended purpose (alcohol detox) and the last clinic i was at fed them like they were smarties, which made the first week slightly more bearable, as i usually saved up four or five and then had a good time for a few hours.
but, i have no idea why they're still used. in my first detox, another alkie smuggled in two small bottles of jäger, those little airline bottles, and after taking two of these weird eggs he downed them.
i have never seen anything alike from two pills and two shots. first his complexion changed color from pale to beet red then yellow and then green. then he collapsed. i, off course, laughed my ass off, but still.
fun fact: a couple of drinks and six of these babies ended the life of keith moon.
which beggars the question: from everything i know about them they have about equal efficacy to the classic alkie detox benzos (librium, valium, oxazepam, clonazepam), so why do they still use a completely obsolete medication on alcoholics that even with a small to medium intake of alcohol can kill you pretty fast (off course this is relative).
any questions, comments, thoughs?
edit: here the pretty meagre wiki article 12 of these a day did make alcohol withdrawal slightly less shitty
