As I was flicking through the Sunday paper on Monday morning at work (a regular occassion for me....I always seem to be trying to catch up with something)
ANYWAY, I came across this EXCELLENT article, on page 4 of the Sydney Morning Herald, it basically goes on to say how there was such a low level of violence and injury on NYE because of the high level of ecstsasy usage. There were quotes from police AND medical staff...i thought it was a breakthrough article and would like to share it with you all.
ONYA AUSSIE MEDIA! Keep it the fuck up! We need more articles like this.

Love's in the air, alcohol nowhere
By GREG BEARUP
At 4am at Bondi on New Year's Day, dozens of bored police wandered past thousands of partygoers with smiles beaming from faces with dilated pupils.
Love, it seemed, was in the air.
There was little for the police to do - not a single fight and only one arrest for a minor drink-driving charge.
Why? The answer, say police and health experts, may be the great shift among young
party goers from alcohol and its associated aggressive behaviour to ecstasy, the love
drug.
"It was quite amazing," a senior Bondi police officer said of one of the most trouble-free New Year's Eves in years.
"Five or 10 years ago everyone would have been drunk and there would have been
fights everywhere. The paddy wagons would have been full, but we had no trouble at
all this year.
"The big topic of conversation amongst the officers on the night was how the
widespread use of ecstasy has really calmed things down. It has changed the whole scene."
The officers at Bondi were easily able to pick out those who had used the drug, with
their broad, dopey smiles, dilated pupils and rapid chewing of gum.
There are concerns that ecstasy may cause damage to brain cells - this has been shown in animal experiments - but the jury is still out on the verdict for humans. UK studies have linked its use with forgetfulness, poor concentration and post-use depression.
In the past few years there has been a shift in the culture of ecstasy in Sydney from a gay and inner-city club drug to widespread mainstream use in the young, straight community.
It has been a change that has led to a significant decline in violence, says Dr Gordian Fulde, the head of accident and emergency at St Vincent's Hospital.
In the 17 years he has been in the job he has seen New Year's Eve turn from a bit of a "bloodbath" to something akin to any normal Thursday night.
At 2.30am on New Year's Day, his staff were still waiting for patients that never
arrived.
"A few years ago the big thing was to go out and get terribly drunk and with that came the violence, beatings and vomit," Dr Fulde said.
"But there has been a major cultural change where the young of today would rather pop a pill, hug each other and dance until dawn - it has certainly cut down on the violence."
At the three biggest parties held in the city on New Year's Eve - Mobile Home at
Bondi Beach, Pride at the old Showground and NY2K at Homebush - there were more than 35,000 young people dancing the night away.
Anecdotal reports from police and partygoers at the parties suggested "a good
percentage" of those in attendance had used ecstasy and other party drugs. No fights or
arrests were reported.
Dr Fulde said the long-term effects of ecstasy were not fully known and people always took a risk when buying illegal drugs. However, the social effects of widespread
ecstasy usewere not as bad as those of alcohol.
"People realise there is another way to have fun other than going out and getting
smashed on alcohol. For a start, the hangover is nowhere near as bad."
How's that? There were a few things I didn't likeabout the article..but overall i thought it was a positive piece of writing. Hopefully we'll see more in the future.
Cheers
mona.

. In the US media, E still stands for Evil.
Forgetfulness, poor concentration, and post-use depression. Gee, kinda sounds like booze there
smile.gif
.
I like that last quote there. Almost sounded like the doctor quite approved of the drug
smile.gif
. Or at least hated alcohol quite a bit more.
In the US, the article would have gone on about how popping pills, hugging friends and dancing 'til dawn were symptoms of Evil. And would have left out that part about the jury still being out on the effects on humans.
Of course, boozing it up's still the popular pasttime here, so I guess people not in the know couldn't really compare overall differences.
Anyhoo, quite a decent little piece. Surprising.

Actualy, in a National Canadian newspaper, The National Post, there was a weekend extra, (an entire pull out SECTION) of the paper dedicated to a 48 hour rave that was just outside of my home town, Winnipeg.
it was an awesome party, and the Media was VERY good about it... well, the reporter WAS hitting on one of my friends... "the cute one, with the pink umbrella" =P I read the article... (I can't find my copy) it was like 3 pages long.... there were PICTURES of mitsubishi's on people's TOUNGES, etc etc etc
at any rate... I think that some of the media is out to HELP us.
maybe they will ALL figure it out someday.
and PLUR will be global!! =)

You would probably find anyway, that the media know's exactly what is going on normally anyway.
Heck, looking at the kind of industry that the media is, E and is assoicated drugs is prolly more rampant at those types of media parties.
So with the media knowing that it is actually going on, and the postive ending of nye in Oz, then they are prolly doing their best to paint a good picture to the readers - cause they prolly know how good it is anyway.
:P

One excited mona,
should have scanned the artical and posted it,He He

Just like PaRaDoX said, maybe they will all figure it out someday!

Hiya Mona
Yep - I read that article in the Sydney Morning Herald the other day and I found it one of the two or three most positive and sensationalism-free newspaper pieces I've ever read about the ecstasy scene. Quite refreshing to read an article that's neither alarmist nor riddled with factual inaccuracies.
Just to keep up the good fight, the next day I got onto 2UE and tried to set Terry Willessee (who was discussing the Bondi NYE gig at the time) straight about the alleged dangers of ecstasy. I didn't get much time on air but was able to point out to him that (a) E is nowhere near as dangerous as the Salvation Army and others are making out (2) Anna Wood DID NOT die from taking E (he raised the topic of Anna) and (c) E poses far fewer threats to takers of the drug and society in general than alcohol and other legal drugs.
An hour or so later Helski got on the radio also and got quite a few minutes on air with Tezza.
Yay for talkback radio - hopefully a least a few of the people who were listening will be less inclined to take at face value the anti-recreational drug propaganda being spewed out by the government and the media.

Paradox...
i don't really think the media is out to help us....or anyone for that matter aside from themselves. But i guess a positive article was bound to come out sometime. (New York)
Anyways if anyone wants to read the feature Paradox was referring to its here http://www.nationalpost.com/content/features/rave/rave1.html

It sounds like Sydney is a fun town.

My mum was listening to the radio - 2UE - and woke me up to tell me about it.
What could I say, in my early morning daze - "ah yeah there were probably a few on I suppose, but it was the new millenium so everyone was well happy and friendly". Parents get so close, yet so far.
The article was wrong on one point though -
"People realise there is another way to have fun other than going out and getting
smashed on alcohol. For a start, the hangover is nowhere near as bad."
I really got to disagree there - I got smashed 3 times this weekend, woke up, hair of the dog, and felt fine on Monday. Yet after NYE I was fooked for the entire week. And I had a pretty tame one at that. Mona well out lasted me on that particular night
