Harm Reduction Carrying Narcan

Okay, so given the number of people that have ODed locally I am considering ordering some Narcan to keep around just in case the worst happens.

Now I am concerned about the legal side of this as I live in a Southern state where even soft drugs can land you in a bit of trouble. I also regularly carry a firearm (or three) with me.

I was planning on making a kit for the Narcan so I would have everything ready to go quickly and taking it with me when I would be going places where I knew my friends would be using opiates. I would most likely keep it in the trunk of my car and on my person when not on the road.

I know this is a bit of a grey area so I mostly wanted to hear from people that also carry it to get an idea of what I am looking at here as I imagine explaining why I have glass full of liquid next to needles probably isn't going to look great in the eyes of the law. I do hope to avoid such a situation but this stuff isn't going to do much good if its miles away at my house when random guy stops breathing at a house party.

Anyone have advice for me?

Have you looked up the laws for your state/county? That should tell you everything you need to know.

I have but information is pretty hard to find for my state, some say its not an issue others point to it begin illegal. I will consult my lawyer before I order for sure but I wanted to hear from BLers as I know a few people here have either used it on friends or at the very least keep it around.

I don't plan on letting anyone know I have it just because I am paranoid but worse case if the EMTs show up I am going to have to explain that we had to give so-and-so Xmgs of it so they can do their job effectively. I am mostly concerned about that conversation and how it may end badly for me.

I would risk jail time to keep a friend alive for sure, but I would like to know what I am getting into. I will try to find for information about my state and report back when I do.

We can't go into legal discussion here, but naloxone is a prescription-only substance, any cop could be a dick and cite you for it if you don't have a legitimate prescription for it. Your local needle exchange would probably be willing to help you acquire a legitimate rx for it (some do in my area).

We're not going to discuss how to get prescribed naloxone in any further depth than I wrote in italics.

There are quite a few needle exchanges (especially the mobile one's in my experience) that, in the name of harm reduction, disseminate ampoules of naloxone without a prescription. I've never heard of them getting in trouble for this, but it is technically against the law (where I live.... this is why we don't allow legal discussion, everything varies nation by nation, state by state, county by county, city by city). Obviously you can acquire the naloxone online, it's just a matter of legitimacy that you're worried about. So I would try to get an RX for it if I were you. I think that's about all we can say on this matter, so I'm just going to close this now.
