Daily administration of cannabis extract (12.5 mg/kg body wt. for 30 days) produced a complete arrest of spermatogenesis in dogs. Distinct degenerative effects were produced in the form of extensive fibrosis and exfoliation of the seminiferous elements. 2. RNA, protein and sialic acid contents of the testis and epididymides were reduced after cannabis extract administration, whereas, testicular cholesterol and enzyme phosphatase were elevated. 3. Serum transaminases were slightly elevated, whereas the alkaline phosphatase and haemoglobin/haematocrit values were in normal range. 4. Histophysiological examination of the liver did not show any damage. 5. Reduced androgen production was reflected in low levels of sialic acid in the testis and epididymides, and shrunken Leydig cell nuclei and luminal epididymal epithelium. 6. In conclusion: Cannabis extract at 12.5 mg/kg body wt. dose level did not cause severe damage to the vital organs but it produced an effective inhibition of spermatogenesis in male dogs in 30 days and thus induces an antifertility state. The possibility of an adverse effect of frequent marihuana use on male reproductive organ functioning in man is alarming.

That 12.5 mg/kg number sounds fishey but I really do not know if that is a uber high dose or not. Any one know if this study is bunk, it is from the 1970s as far as I am concerned the second revival of reefer-madness puesdo-science.

12.5 mg/kg is vey vey high. There's about 10mg of THC in a pure joint if I recall correctly. That's a daily administrattion of the equivalent of 85 joints a day for a man.

That's a MASSIVE dose. Massive massive massive. That'd be big enough if you stripped off the /kg part.

For a one gram joint, you'd expect 10mg if the pot was 10% THC. I guess you could hit 30.

1mg is a psychoactive dose for most people.

with per kilogram

bloody hell

i don't think you could smoke that much... at least not easily, i mean i'm slightly underweight at about 55-60kg... i would need to smoke about 70 pure joints a day to manage that.

if you're smoking that much weed then who cares about your sperm count... your lungs are so much charcoal anyway that breedings kinda out of the picture

i bet those dogs were unconcious for most the month. if you're that stoned, forget about reproducing, could you even figure out how to unzip your pants?

I think you mean 100mg.

what's a "pure joint?" :\
There really is no de facto amount of thc in buds, it varies greatly with dozens of factors that could change it, both while the plant is alive, and after it's been picked.

So I have been checking out NIDA's animal studies and researching what the typical dose of THC the average toker is getting. I read in a scholarly journal that it is 2-5 mg of THC, which makes sense since that is close to the dosage of Marinol.

Which leads me to my next comment. I was reading up on a NIDA study where they dose lab mice with THC and the mice show mental deficits for the next 24 hours or so. The problem, the mice are given 2mg of pure THC, the same dose as a human, but without the other cannabinoids to taper off the high. Which begs the question, are NIDA's studies peer reviewed? Has any respectable medical/scientific group exposed them for what they are?
